FAWE Sierra Leone participated in the English Language Conference: A Roadmap and Action Plan for National Reform, held under the theme: “English Language Performance: Addressing the Issues Impacting National Development.”
The conference brought together education leaders, government officials, and development partners to examine key challenges affecting English language learning and identify practical solutions to improve outcomes nationwide.
In his keynote address, the Minister of Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Hon. Conrad Sackey, highlighted that while access to education is improving, performance in English, particularly in WASSCE, continues to decline. He stressed that poor reading foundations in early grades remain a major barrier to student success.
Day Two focused on teacher training, revealing a gap between training approaches and classroom realities, and reinforcing the need for stronger teacher support systems.
A draft communiqué was also developed to guide policy actions and interventions, with key resolutions on teaching methods, learning materials, and improved pathways for better English outcomes.
In his closing remarks, the Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to turning these discussions into meaningful action, calling for continued collaboration and innovation to drive lasting impact.
