Is it appropriate to label someone on the internet โboomer,โ โtrentahin,โ or โchronically online,โ just because of the way they type or communicate online? In an environment where โHAHAHAโ and โhahahaโ are different, can we easily tell the generational differences of people online? In todayโs digital age, social barriers between generations are becoming less and less present as the internet allows them to freely interact. Different age groups develop and adopt distinct ways of socializing online based on their exposure to the rapidly changing digital culture. We will be exploring how different age demographic cohorts interact with each other on the internet, and how this influences their language.

Movement across space, whether within smaller communities like UP Diliman, in the Philippines, or across countries, reshapes how people are linguistically socialized and how they are recognized by others. Migration determines which languages become dominant through strong and weak social ties, community exposure, and practical necessity, often at the cost of heritage languages. Factors such as social networks, language attitudes, religion, and frequency of movement influence how deeply a language is acquired or maintained. Crucially, consequences extend beyond individual competence: speakers face misrecognition of identity, accent-based judgment, and authenticity policing. Language becomes both a social resource and a marker through which belonging, legitimacy, and identity are negotiated across different contexts and spaces.
