The UP Resilience Institute YouthMappers (UPRIYM) recently had the pleasure of hosting students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) for an OpenStreetMap for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Workshop.

The session began with an introduction to UPRIYM, the global YouthMappers network, and the importance of open data in strengthening disaster resilience and supporting communities. Participants then learned how to contribute to OpenStreetMap using field mapping tools such as Every Door and Mapillary.

During the field mapping activity, NUS students were accompanied by UPRIYM members along different routes around the UP Diliman campus. Using their phones, participants added new points of interest to OpenStreetMap and captured valuable street-level imagery to help improve geographic data. Around 𝟐𝟎𝟕 𝗻𝗼𝗱𝗲𝘀 were mapped for the activity 🎉

Despite the rainy season, participants enthusiastically explored the campus—some even hopped on the iconic Ikot jeepney while collecting mapping data along their routes! ✨ Their energy and willingness to learn made the activity both productive and enjoyable.

Thank you to our NUS participants and UPRIYM volunteers for making this collaborative mapping activity a success. We look forward to more opportunities to learn and map together! 💙💚

UPRI YouthMappers (UPRIYM), in partnership with Berean Crosspointe International (BCI) Marikina, worked with Grade 11 students as part of their Disaster Risk Reduction and Management class for a session on mapping for street-level resilience 🗺️🌱

Using EveryDoor, students mapped trees, drains, street lamps, benches, and other features — contributing to local data in an area that still has limited coverage on OpenStreetMap.

More than just an activity, it became a fun and interactive introduction to mapping. The students were genuinely excited by how maps work, actively engaging during the session and gaining a deeper appreciation for how mapping can support communities. By the end, many showed interest in continuing and understanding its role in resilience ✨

Through small features like trees and drains, we take steps toward building more informed and prepared communities.
