Today, UNAWA PH held the Final Project Defense for our membership applicants, marking an important milestone in their journey toward becoming part of our organization.

After weeks of learning, preparing, and working on their respective projects, our applicants had the opportunity to present their outputs and demonstrate their commitment to environmental advocacy. We are also happy to officially welcome some of them as new members of UNAWA PH!

To everyone who took part in todayโ€™s defense, congratulations on reaching this milestone! Your efforts and willingness to take part in creating positive change are worth celebrating.

To our newly welcomed members, welcome to the UNAWA PH community! May this be the beginning of a meaningful journey of learning, leadership, and collective action for people and the planet. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒŽ

At Lake Lanao in Mindanao, 15 endemic fish species have been declared extinct, one of the Philippinesโ€™ worst biodiversity disasters. These cyprinidsโ€”including Barbodes amarus, B. baoulan, B. clemensi, B. disa, B. flavifuscus, B. herrei, B. katolo, B. lanaoensis, B. manalak, B. pachycheilus, B. palaemophagus, B. palata, B. resimus, B. tras, and B. truncatulusโ€”were found nowhere else on Earth.

The 2020 IUCN assessments identified the 15 as extinct, while Barbodes lindog and Barbodes sirang are critically endangered and possibly extinct. These fish were part of a remarkable โ€œexplosiveโ€ evolutionary radiation, occupying different ecological niches in the lake.

The main cause was introduced predatory fish, which preyed on native species and competed for resources. Other contributing pressures included overexploitation, pollution, and changes to the lake and Agus River system. The 15 species made up almost half of all species declared extinct in that IUCN Red List update. One fragile sign of survival remains: Barbodes tumba was confirmed in the Agus River system through DNA barcoding and is now subject to conservation efforts.

Yesterday, September 18, 2026, UNAWA PH welcomed our new applicants during our Capacity Building Activity held at the MSU Main, CSSH Lobby.

The session served as an opportunity for our applicants to learn more about UNAWA PH, our mission, values, programs, and the work we do as a youth-led environmental organization. They were also oriented about their upcoming project, which serves as an important step in their journey toward becoming official members of the UNAWA PH family.

We are excited to see our new applicants learn, collaborate, and take their first steps toward becoming young environmental advocates. May this journey inspire them to use their voices, skills, and passion to create meaningful change for people and the planet. ๐Ÿ’š

The Sierra Madre is the Philippinesโ€™ longest mountain range, stretching over 500 kilometers and covering nearly 1.4 million hectares. Often called โ€œLuzonโ€™s backbone,โ€ it is home to half of the countryโ€™s old-growth forests and about 40% of its total forest cover, supporting over 3,500 plant species and diverse wildlife.

This mountain range protects communities by acting as a natural shield against typhoons, while also absorbing carbon dioxide to help regulate the climate and maintain ecological balance. However, it is disappearing at an alarming rate of 9,000 hectares per year due to government and corporate projects like dams, hydropower plants, and road construction. If this destruction continues, the consequences will be severe: stronger typhoon damage, permanent loss of unique plants and animals, faster climate change, and the forced displacement of indigenous peoples who depend on the forest for their survival.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Nepal. ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ต

On Wednesday, heavy flash floods and mudslides swept through mountain areas along the Nepalโ€“Tibet border. The disaster began high in the Himalayas, where part of a glacier broke off, triggering a devastating rush of water, mud, and rocks through the Lhende Khola river valley.

The floods buried villages, destroyed homes, and damaged critical infrastructure, including at least 19 bridges and around 40 kilometers of roads. According to reports, hundreds of people have died across Nepal and Tibet, while many others remain missing.

Scientists are still studying exactly why the glacier gave way, and it is too early to determine how much climate change directly contributed to this particular event. However, the Himalayas are warming rapidly. Between 2011 and 2020, glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya region lost ice 65% faster than during the previous decade, while Nepalโ€™s glaciers have lost nearly one-third of their ice in roughly 30 years.

As rescue teams continue searching for survivors and delivering emergency supplies, communities face difficult conditions, including damaged roads, high rivers, and the threat of further flooding.

At this difficult time, UNAWA PH stands in solidarity with the people and communities affected by this tragedy. We honor those who have lost their lives, pray for those still missing, and extend our deepest hopes for the safety and recovery of those affected.

May rescue efforts reach those who need help, and may affected communities receive the support they need to recover and rebuild. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ต
