This map feature highlights key findings from an interdisciplinary assessment of the Sambunotan Watershed in the Dinagat Islands, aimed at strengthening sustainable water resource governance through integrated spatial and environmental analysis.
The Sambunotan Watershed serves as a critical source of domestic water supply for multiple barangays, while also supporting agriculture and local biodiversity. Increasing pressures from deforestation, mining activities, and land-use change heighten the need for a detailed understanding of watershed behavior, water availability, and environmental vulnerability.
Using GIS and a 5-meter spatial resolution Digital Terrain Model (DTM), the researchers refined the watershed boundary and confirmed that the Sambunotan River is not the primary tributary within the basin. Hydrological modeling estimated an annual baseflow of 71.6 million cubic meters, with the majority generated during the wet season, emphasizing the importance of seasonal water management. Geological mapping identified lithologic units and areas susceptible to degradation, while water quality analysis revealed a strong relationship between forest cover and healthier water parameters. Zones composed of clastic sediments and limestone were identified as potential aquifers due to favorable porosity characteristics.
By integrating spatial, hydrological, geological, and water quality datasets, the study provides a holistic view of water movement, storage, and quality within the Sambunotan Watershed. The findings support watershed conservation, guide groundwater exploration, and contribute directly to long-term sustainable water supply planning in the Dinagat Islands.
