TUATAPERE: Bring the little ones along for Active Bodies, Curious Minds – a fun session where preschoolers can climb, balance, create, explore and learn through play. 🌿🤸‍♀️

There’ll be plenty to keep busy bodies and curious minds entertained, with both active movement and calmer sensory-rich play to enjoy.

Representatives from Active Southland and Southland Kindergarten Association will also be there to meet with local whānau, listen to the community, and better understand local early childhood education needs.

Throughout September, the Southern REAP team stepped, strolled and got a little too competitive in our month-long STEP-tember Challenge.

Using the Stridekick app, we challenged ourselves with:
👣 Step Up! – Total steps walked each day
📍 Go the Distance! – total distance each day
🔥 7k Streak – hitting 7,000 steps each day
🌻 The Spring Sprint – completing the 150km map

Everyone put in a solid effort, and STEP-tember definitely changed up our usual workday routine. Lunch breaks that would normally be spent sitting in the staff room gasbagging turned into walks, and we even had line dancing lessons with our Early Childhood Co-ordintor Maree Day to squeeze in a few extra steps! 💃👟

In true Southland fashion, the weather certainly didn’t make it easy – we took on the challenge during the wettest spring in more than 50 years, so there were plenty of wet walks and puddles along the way.

A huge well done to everyone who got involved, kept each other motivated and found some questionable but creative ways to keep those step counts ticking over! It was a great excuse to get out and about, and even the dogs are looking fitter for it. A month of extra walking has taken its toll though, with a few blisters, aching muscles and various other walking-related ailments to show for our efforts! But all in all a great challenge for the team.

A welcoming space for expectant mothers and mums with babies up to one year old. Connect with other parents, enjoy a cuppa, and access support for both you and your pēpi.

🏃 Let's Move @ The Nest
A fun, active environment where tamariki can move, explore and build confidence through play while whānau connect and support one another. This is currently full, but we are taking names for our Waiting List.

🤝 Generations at Play
Bringing preschoolers and older community members together through play, laughter and meaningful connections that benefit all generations.

Come along to our 'Active Bodies, Curious Minds' session tomorrow at the Glenorchy Hall, 31 Mull Street. Preschoolers welcome: 10.30am – 12noon.

Bring your tamariki along to this session where they can climb, balance, jump, roll and swing, building strength, co-ordination and the physical and neurological foundations for thriving in learning environments based on the Moving Smart – Smart Steps Programme.

A second, calmer space offers open ended, heuristic and loose parts play, where children can explore, experiment, create, and problem solve using sensory rich materials at their own pace.

Tamariki are encouraged to follow their interests and choose the play space that matches their energy, supporting resilience, self regulation, confidence, and emotional awareness.

We are lucky to live and work in such a beautiful part of the country! Our ECE Co-ordinator Naomi is on her way up to tonight's Kōwhiti Whakapae interactive session in Frankton.

With over 45 Early Childhood kaiako (teachers) coming together to connect, reflect, share successes, challenges and solutions. They will gain practical strategies to support children's learning and strengthen their everyday teaching practice.
