Words were the focus today as Year 3–4 students from Heddon Bush School, St Thomas Aquinas School, Wallacetown School, Drummond Primary School & Dipton School came together for an exciting Southern REAP Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) cluster session.

Through our programme, we create opportunities for learners to connect with peers who share similar interests and strengths. Working alongside schools across Central, Western, and Eastern Southland, we help challenge young minds through enriching experiences that inspire creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and discovery.

Today's theme was 'Verbivores' – people who love to devour words!

Students explored context clues, prefixes, suffixes, and Greek and Latin roots to uncover the meanings of unfamiliar words. They also explored multiple-meaning words and discovered how expanding their vocabulary can strengthen both their communication and confidence.

Well done to our young learners and a big thank you to our tutor Robyn Irwin for sharing your knowledge!

This week, educators across Fiordland joined Nurturing relationships - Andrea Greer for two engaging professional learning sessions focused on supporting tamariki to thrive.

🧠 In Practical Strategies to Support our Neurodiverse Tamariki, participants explored neuro-affirming approaches and gained practical tools to create inclusive learning environments that support focus, emotional regulation and success for neurodivergent learners.

πŸ’š In Big Bursting Behaviours, educators learned about the different states of the nervous system, co-regulation, and playful strategies to help tamariki build emotional regulation skills and navigate big emotions.

Andrea also offers a workshop on Understanding Childhood Trauma's Impact on Behaviour, helping educators understand how trauma can influence behaviour, relationships and learning outcomes.

The response from participants was overwhelmingly positive! 😊

πŸ“ Rural Southland & Whakatipu β€” could your community be next?

If there is interest, Southern REAP can work with schools, early childhood centres and education providers to bring Andrea's workshops to your area. Get in touch!

Our Alternative Education students have been busy!

They have had some fun exploring how everyday items can be given a second life through recycling and repurposing.

Using recycled plastic bottles, they created self-watering planters and planted a variety of herbs, learning about sustainability, gardening and reducing waste.

The creativity didn't stop there... plain T-shirts got a colourful makeover with some vibrant tie-dye designs, showing how old or unwanted clothing can be given a fresh new look instead of being thrown away.

These hands-on activities got everyone thinking differently about waste and proved that with a bit of imagination, ordinary items can be turned into something useful, unique and pretty awesome.
