Last night was our Mid-Winter Christmas demonstration.

Our demonstrators, Anna, Estelle, Susan and Sheree, shared a collection of festive designs using flowers, foliage and natural and foraged materials. From a rustic wreath and contemporary Christmas trees to creative seasonal designs, there was plenty of inspiration on display.

Our competition bench title was "Edgy and Innovative".

What a delight to see so many lovely designs on our Competition table at our May meeting – 16 beautifully executed designs and a delight to see so many flowers still lingering in our late autumn gardens. The title “A Mother’s Love” (A Mother’s Day design) resonated and the perfume was absolutely heavenly.

Helen and Jan were our “SHARE AN IDEA” presenters. Helen spoke about how she learnt to make garden art from old vinyl records. Her first forays into making colourful flowers led onto exploring other possibilities including a delightful Christmas tree – just like in floral art, one thing often opens up other potential ideas to investigate and trial. Jan’s talk was entitled “Please don’t mow your lawns” and was about her new “retirement” project, beekeeping. Her message included ‘Let your lawns grow so there’s clover for bees’, or if this isn’t possible plant lots of bee-friendly plants to help our bee population along. We learnt lots of new things about bees, who knew there’s such a thing as “Virgin Queens” or that bees can be pretty creative wax sculptors!

Our President Helen reported on her time at the recent Floral Art Society national Conference in Blenheim. First up, sharing a well-kept secret and some exciting news, we’re all absolutely delighted to learn that Alison has achieved two Diary Awards including the Front Cover Award. Well done Alison and huge Congratulations from us all.

Helen shared some concepts, techniques and designing materials from Conference including using paper cane, paper raffia and creating wire flowers which members had a go at. Her “Christmas Tree” workshop must have been a treat as it was held at Hunter Winery – what could be better than working amongst the barrels while they’re bottling this years vintage next door. There was also an example from a Workshop that used cake boards and aluminium wire mesh, and a post-Conference extension on the theme. Plenty of ideas and simple materials to explore over the Winter months.

Last night we had so much fun creating our “Flower Frenzy” basket designs using the last of the blooms from our gardens. 🌿🌸

We were shown how to make a rustic basket base using soft branches/vines and weaving and twisting them together to hold in place and then we added our container and flowers/greenery.

It was such a lovely evening of sharing flowers, ideas and inspiration. Thank you Susan and Allison for another wonderful workshop and for encouraging us to see just how much beauty can come from the garden at this time of year.

Glenys "shared an idea" and talked to us about gourds.

Last night at Central Southland Floral Art Club we held our AGM. Our top table remains the same for the coming year with Helen Baird as President, Sheree Casey as Secretary, and Wendy Bates as Treasurer.

A new and exciting programme is currently being put together for the year ahead, so new members are always very welcome to come along and join us.

Our competition for the evening was “Stack It”, and as always there were some creative interpretations.

Our Share an Idea session is always a highlight. Dee gave us a glimpse into what she enjoys doing in her spare time, showing us her beautiful flax weaving and some pieces she has created using kina.

Rhonda also shared some interesting design components with the group.

Helen also attended the recent area day and shared information from that.

We finished the evening with a fun cupboard clean-out swap, where members brought along a container or design component and traded with each other — a great way to pass things on and find new inspiration for future designs.

Another enjoyable and creative evening with lovely like-minded people. 🌿🌸

2026 is a special milestone year for our Club as we celebrate 50 years of floral design in Central Southland. At our first meeting of the year designers worked to the title “(Let’s start our year of Birthday Celebrations with) A Dinner Table Design”. It was lovely to see so many designs gracing the Show Bench, all very different in styling and highlighting flowers from our gardens. Thank you to Judges Rhonda and Heather for your constructive comments and suggestions for improvement.

We hit the year running with a hands-on Workshop. Members worked with great enthusiasm to create rustic bird cages under the guidance of Anna and Wendy who had pre-prepared materials packs and guided us through the technique. Participants put their own spin on the concept and the outcomes were absolutely delightful. We look forward to seeing how everyone uses their “cage” and the extension ideas that result. A great way to start the year, thank you Anna and Wendy.

Some of the members who were able to attend our Concrete Workshop at Forest Hill in January showed their now dry pieces. It must have been a fun day, messy in the best possible way, and the resulting balls are useful components for contemporary design or the garden. Thanks to Julie for sharing your expertise in creating these.

Like many other Clubs, our programme relies on members researching, experimenting, trialing and then sharing techniques and concepts with fellow club members. I saw a quote recently that I think encapsulate this philosophy … “Each time you share, you make a little space in your mind and that space invites something new in” … Ilse Beunen, a Belgian Ikebana teacher. As a Club we get to experience lots of different aspects of floral design and our members are richer for the generosity of the people who accept the challenge of tutoring. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU … and please keep making that “space”.

Today our club members got together for a concrete ball workshop led by Julie Hamilton. It was messy, creative, and lots of fun as we made concrete balls using fabric, wool, and a variety of cords and rope, all set in a slurry concrete mix. Once the balls are extra dry the beach ball moulds will be removed and you are left with a rustic ball suitable for your garden or outdoors. There was plenty of laughter, hands-on learning, and some fantastic results to take home at the end of the day.
