Terry from Bland Bay was able to answer our call for 2 x Korora nesting boxes for the seabird rehab enclosure we are developing.

Terry, thanks SO much for your generosity.

There are not many chicks cuter than the Paradise Duckling 💙

Native species: They are endemic to New Zealand, meaning they live nowhere else naturally.

We have been exponentially receiving baby birds over the last week. Fortunately volunteers are putting their hands up to take babies home for extra care.

The appeal will fund quarantine upgrades, a seabird ward and new brooders.

The Sacred Kingfisher/Kotare is always a favourite among our volunteers to help get back into the wild. This one was a suspected car strike from Maungatapere and was assessed by one of the vets at Mill Road Vet Practice. There were no fractures fortunately.

He received some sub cut fluids, pain relief and cage rest. The good news? He was released and proceeded down the valley towards Barge Park, passing another Kingfisher (who you might be able to see) who was hanging out on the power lines. A win.

🐧 This penguin arrived after being knocked around in the surf at Baylys Beach and was assessed by one of the vets at Mill Road Vet Practice. There are signs of trauma, and he isn’t walking properly.

He’s receiving pain relief and is being tube-fed a mix of fish, squid and a special seabird vitamin three times daily, as he isn’t eating by himself at the moment. 🐟🦑

The good news? He’s gained 100g since arriving! There’s still a way to go, but we’re hopeful he’ll start eating on his own soon, recover and return to the sea. 💙

Help give Northland’s injured birds a safe place to recover 💚

A bird hit by a car. An orphaned chick. A seabird too exhausted to feed. These are some of the patients arriving at Whangārei Native Bird Recovery Centre needing help.

Today we’re launching our Givealittle appeal to raise $150,000 for better hospital facilities and the everyday costs of caring for them.

Your donation will help fund a dedicated seabird ward, improved quarantine facilities, new cages and nursery brooders as well as veterinary treatment, medicines and specialist food.

It’s a big target, but every donation helps. Whether you give $10, $20 or $50, you’ll be helping birds receive the care they need for a chance to return to the wild. A regular donation helps us keep that care going.

Please donate if you can:

Update: Thank you Terrance for offering to make both nesting boxes (providing the materials and your labour) - we look forward to taking delivery of your generosity and skill.

We desperately need 2 x Korora/Little Blue Penguin boxes built.

Can you or a handyman friend help us out?

We have plans, supplied by our good friends at NZPI (New Zealand Penguin Initiative). We are able to pay for the materials and are hoping someone with the know how could construct them for us 🙏 🙏

Our volunteers are an invaluable component to the centre.

Seemingly simple tasks like putting new stones on a set of stairs helps beyond what words can express.

This kiwi chick hatched at our centre in early August. At 11 days old it was taken to Auckland Zoo by our lovely DoC partners from Kerikeri to get some required specialist care. It left the centre weighing 171 grams. We’re pleased to share that Auckland Zoo’s veterinary team has informed us that the chick is doing really well, and at 40 days old, now weighs over 400gm.

Following completion of its 30-day quarantine in a few days’ time, it will be moved to an outdoor habitat (in a non-visitor area) at the Zoo where it will remain until it reaches its ideal weight (over 1kg) for release to the wild.
