Agos ng Kamay (Tide of the Hand) uplifts and preserves Baybayin—a pre-colonial Filipino writing system—drawing from the organic forms of taklobo, giant clamshells native to the Philippines.

Gia collaborates with Jas Sabrine on a photographic series and workshop, creating space to learn and practice Baybayin as a form of cultural reconnection.

Agos ng Kamay will be held at Meanwhile Gallery from 27—31 May. Opening night on Wednesday 27 May from 5:30pm.

REPOST FROM: Jasmine Sabrine

Kari ka sa akon, Inday (Come to me, Darling)
Jas Sabrine
30.04.26 — 6.05.26
Opening: Wednesday April 29th at 5:30pm

Inday or ‘Day is a feminine Hiligaynon term of endearment, something my lola (grandmother) often calls me. The sound of her voice calling out “Inday, nag kaon ka na?” (Darling, have you eaten yet?) with so much love and warmth. ‘Kari ka sa akon, Inday (Come to me, Darling)’ is the land calling me home.

The exhibition explores what it means to hold personal and collective histories in memory, land and material. ‘Kari ka sa akon, Inday (Come to me, Darling)’ was shaped by my recent trip to my lola’s home in Negros Occidental—a home my cousins and I grew up in, and the home my family lived in before moving to Aotearoa. This exhibition weaves together past and present, memory and lived experience, inviting others to reflect on what home means to them. Where is home for you?

Special thanks to Gia Espelita for the beautifully made poster ⭐️

My .nz crowdfunding campaign for my short animated film, Wing Chun, finishes on Sunday 19th April. Here's a short video introducing the amazing cast - Jacqueline Joe, Gary Young and Audrey Chan. Even though we don't see the actors on screen, it was really important to me that we found Chinese actors to voice these characters. We had a blast recording the dialogue and they really brought the characters to life with their performances. I can't wait for you to hear them, and see the finished film! If you'd like to support this film, donate today! https://www.thearts.co.nz/boosted/projects/wing-chun-an-animated-short-film
