GRANT RECIPIENT STORY

Badly injured in a motocross accident two years ago, 15-year-old Max is still on the road to recovery. However, a set of golf clubs granted by the Wilson Home Trust has given him a new lease of life. ⛳️🏌🏼‍♂️

“Max was over the moon when he received the clubs,” says his father, Glenn. “He plays one-handed, but his left hand is now starting to improve. He loves going out with his mates, and golf is a safe, social sport that he can do with them. “

A few months after the accident, the family also received a holiday grant from the Wilson Home Trust. “We went to Taupō and went parasailing – that was awesome,” says Glenn. “Max had only been out of hospital for five or six months – it was a great way to celebrate that he was alive and to remind us how far he’d come.”

To other families facing similar challenges, Glenn has this advice: “Definitely apply for grants. Whether it’s equipment, a holiday, or something that helps your child stay occupied and do what other kids can do, it can really make a huge difference.”

A grant towards equipment or activities can be life-changing for a young person rehabilitating from an injury. 🩵

12-year-old Amelie adores her new companion dog and best friend, Maple – and so does the rest of her family. A***n says that Maple has just fitted perfectly into their lives.

“She’s been a great emotional support for Amelie when she’s sick or not feeling great. She’s also a good ‘icebreaker’ when we’re out and about. Kids can sometimes feel awkward about the wheelchair, but they’ll stop and talk to Amelie because Maple is there. Then they realise that Amelie is just like them, but in a wheelchair. It’s been lovely for her.”

“We feel incredibly lucky to have Maple in our family and we’re so very grateful for Wilson Home Trust for giving us the opportunity to purchase this gorgeous dog. Thank you!”

A grant towards a companion dog can be life-changing for children with physical disabilities. Read Amelie’s story or visit our website to learn more about our grants.

7-year-old Zachery loves cuddles, going to school and being around friends at school – and he especially loves his new trike! His Mum, Nicky, is just as delighted with the adaptable trike, made possible by one of our Equipment & Activities Grants.

“The trike has given him so much more mobility,” says Nicky. “It’ll grow with him until he’s about 10 or 12 years old. It gives him the ability to be like other kids and go places. By next year, he’ll hopefully be using it independently.”

Zachery also loved having a family holiday last year at Tasman Miranda holiday park, thanks to one of our holiday grants (see picture). And in 2023, he received a grant towards an iPad, which gives him more independence and autonomy – and gives Nicky a break to get jobs done.

All the grants have been invaluable for Zachery and his family. “First of all, the iPad – it’s in use right now,” says Nicky. ‘Then having that amazing holiday, and now, the trike which make a difference for years to come. Thank you so much – the grants really have been life-changing for us.”
