Grateful and excited for this opportunity! Looking forward to sharing some of the work we are doing at ELP, learning from others across the sector, and contributing to the conversation. Many thanks to ACE Aotearoa and Nita for the connection and support.

Meet Dr Jia Rong Yap – Centre Manager at English Language Partners Rotorua, AI Project Advisor for English Language Partners New Zealand, and one of the ako facilitators at ACE Conference 2026. 🌏

Her session draws on ELPNZ's AI for Enhanced Teaching project, exploring how generative AI can be used responsibly in adult ESOL programmes – including for learners with limited literacy.

📣Volunteers needed in Rotorua and Whakatāne!

We have learners who are eager to improve their English and build connections in their communities but shift work, childcare, and transport make regular classes hard to attend. That's where one-to-one volunteer tutoring makes a real difference.

No teaching experience is required. We provide full training at our upcoming volunteer workshop in June 2026.

A heartfelt thank you to the Catalytic Foundation for their generous support again this year for our centres in Palmerston North, Horowhenua-Kāpiti, Christchurch, Dunedin and Southland.

This funding plays a vital role in helping us build a more connected and welcoming Aotearoa, where people from refugee and migrant backgrounds can settle well and succeed.

We're grateful that the Catalytic Foundation recognises the importance of funding operating costs - the behind‑the‑scenes essentials that make everything possible, from creating supportive learning environments to running programmes and responding quickly to learner needs.

This support ensures we can continue delivering meaningful impact across communities. Thank you! ⭐

Learning English in Aotearoa means learning some everyday te reo Māori too.

For Dejay, this made a real difference when she was interviewed for a role at Te Papa.

She was able to confidently share the te reo Māori greetings and phrases she’d learnt in her English Language Partners classes.

The interview panel was impressed and Dejay got the job! 🎉

Learning everyday te reo Māori is part of our cultural strategy, Te Ara Ahurea, which recognises te reo Māori as a taonga and weaves it into our teaching programmes.

We're so proud of Dejay who is settling into her new job well! 🌿

Exciting news! Our Auckland North Shore Centre has moved to Windsor Park.

📍 New address: 542 East Coast Road, Windsor Park, Auckland

The new centre is much bigger than our previous Takapuna space - with bright, spacious classrooms and outdoor areas where you can relax, study and chat with teachers and classmates.

There’s lots of free parking, and it’s easy to get here by bus. 🚌

With offices, classrooms, and parking now on one site, the new centre is more welcoming, accessible and connected for learners, volunteers and staff.

We’re open to visitors from today, and classes will begin here after Easter.

Lunar New Year was celebrated in an Upper Hutt class last month with traditional Chinese calligraphy and dumpling‑making! 🖌️🥟

For some learners, it was a chance to proudly share their culture. For others, it was a fun way to discover new festive traditions.

With people from all over the world, this class has grown into a lively and supportive community. Celebrations like Lunar New Year help everyone connect - sharing culture, building friendships and practising English in meaningful ways.

Elevate your English ⬆️

Huy did - and he now owns Elevation Cafe in Motueka.

Huy says joining English for Employees classes gave him the confidence to open his own café and communicate well with customers.

Now he can chat to customers, share news and use Kiwi slang like “take it easy."

Congrats, Huy! ☕

After escaping the war in Ukraine, Iryna is stitching together a new life in Christchurch - in more ways than one.

A trained anaesthetist, she never imagined her childhood love of knitting would lead to a job at Weft Knitting Company. Now she hand‑stitches high‑quality merino garments that need ‘a surgeon’s touch.’

“In New Zealand no one dies if I make a mistake at work and I am sleeping much better,” says Iryna.

Since arriving in 2022, she has thrown herself into English classes. She started with basic English and now presents confidently to groups of learners. English Language Partners Christchurch Centre Manager Sheryl says her progress is no surprise, calling her commitment “outstanding.”

Iryna has also become an active volunteer, from helping at SPCA Op Shops to supporting Christchurch Riding for the Disabled. She now works part‑time with Bike Bridge Christchurch, cycling around Christchurch to help other women learn to ride.

“At Bike Bridge I was so happy because I saw so many women from around the world… I realised I was not alone here in New Zealand.”

Reflecting on her journey, Iryna says, “I was very shy when I arrived in New Zealand three years ago. I spoke English very badly. Look at me now! I give power point presentations in English to promote the Bike Bridge cycling programme.”

Whether she becomes a first aid trainer or finds another path that blends her medical experience with her new skills, we’re incredibly proud of how far she’s come and thrilled she’s part of our community.

For 25 years, more than 500 volunteer mentors have generously shared their time and expertise to help over 1500 Wellington migrants navigate job seeking.

Unfortunately, the Wellington Job Mentoring Service will end on 28 February 2026 because it has become increasingly challenging to obtain funding.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved – mentors, mentees, staff and funders. The impact of this service will live on – in the stories and successes of the people who have found work and built new lives in Aotearoa.

We remain committed to our charitable purposes. Our free English programmes continue nationwide – including English for job seeking and work, and our volunteer home tutoring programme.

Unfortunately, this free service no longer has the funding to continue, and it will end on 28 February 2026.

Volunteers at English Language Partners come from all walks of life and bring their own unique experiences to the role.

Some are New Zealand-born, while others come from migrant or refugee backgrounds. Some volunteers were even once English language learners themselves. After building their skills, they feel inspired to give back and support others on their learning journeys.

Dhana moved to New Zealand from Sri Lanka in 2023 and joined an English for Employees class to improve her workplace English. Motivated to give back, she completed the Home Tutor training in 2025. “The free English classes and my tutor have helped me a lot here. I’m very grateful. Now I want to share what I’ve learnt and help a migrant with their English,” she says.

Dhana’s story highlights the ripple effect of volunteering: when knowledge, skills, and kindness are shared, they grow into confidence, friendships and stronger communities.
