UPDATE
Good afternoon Cat Care Staff,

Below is a little message I have written about our dear Chase who has been with us two weeks now.

What can one say but thank you, first, to the lady who did the right thing, by surrendering a beautiful cat she obviously loved, because she could no longer care for him in the way he was accustomed, and secondly thank you to Care Care and particularly Tiffany for taking good care of our delightful Chase, we kept his name, he seems quite content with it!!He has fitted so quickly and wonderfully into our home, within two hours he was cleaning himself and then sprawled himself out on the carpet for a snooze. Twelve years old he might be but he doesn’t act like it. Getting an older cat has been an excellent decision on our part, we wouldn’t change a thing.

Don't be a Mike, if you have a stray cat please:
Advertise
Check with neighbours
Take to vet or local rescue to scan for microchip
Put a paper collar on
If owner cannot be located or cat is not easily handled, PLEASE contact your local rescue.

Taking any cat and dumping it or encouraging others to do it is illegal, irresponsible and clearly shows your lack of IQ!

Did you know…?

There are so many cats and kittens deserving of homes, but very few people willing to offer them one if there’s “nothing in it for them”.

The kitty can’t be touched, so what’s the point? 🤷‍♀️

So what’s supposed to happen to those cats and kittens?

🔺 A rescue desexes a cat and places them in a foster home to work on socialisation. They make progress, but it can be slow.

“This cat has been in care for almost two years and really needs a home.”

… Silence.

OR

The cat gets adopted by someone who appears to understand their needs, only to hear:

“I’ve had the cat for a week now and they still won’t sit on my lap.” 🤦‍♀️

🔺 A rescue desexes a cat and releases them back where they came from.

“Can you believe they do that!”
“What about the wildlife!”

🔺 A rescue euthanises the wild cats they trap.

“Cat killers!”
“And they call themselves a rescue!”

What would you like us rescues to do? Just leave all the “wild” cats out there to breed completely out of control?

Do what YOU believe is right for the cats in your care, with the resources and options you actually have.

You’re the one working your ass off to reduce the unwanted cat population. You’re doing the hard work and seeing the heartbreaking state some of these cats are in. You’re the one making difficult decisions when there’s no perfect outcome.

Screw the keyboard warriors who have plenty to say but are doing absolutely nothing about the massive cat problem we have in NZ.

Pictured is Nova. Fortunately for her, she landed somewhere she gets to live her best life, with zero expectation of giving me anything in return.

Do I want to be able to touch her? Of course!

Do I often tell her she’s a dick for not letting me cuddle her? Absolutely! 😅

But does she owe me cuddles in exchange for a safe, happy life? Nope 🩷

Here is Natcat, a 7 month old brown tabby torti short-haired female kitten.

Personality: extremely playful and extremely affectionate, but quite shy and cautious around new situations.

She would benefit from being settled in a small space such as a crate or a small room with her essentials in it, before she would be ready to have the run of the house.

Her ideal home: any loving home with any aged humans. She loves other cats and is fine with cat-friendly dogs.

Health: desexed, microchipped, vaccinated (due again in a month) flea-treated and wormed and comes with 42 days free pet insurance.

Here is Tiggles, a 3yo short-haired female cat with a very unusual coat colour of tabby and tortie together.

Personality: extremely affectionate, loves to be picked up and cuddled while she purrs, but also very shy and cautious around people.

She would benefit from being settled in a small space such as a crate or a small room with her essentials in it, before she would be ready to have the run of the house. She is inclined to hide under furniture and behind whiteware if given the chance.

She likes to be hidden from view so a small box or cave-type bed is best for her.

Her ideal home: loving home with patient adults with no expectations. She loves other cats and might benefit from being with a very confident cat friend. With time and careful introductions she could be ok with a cat-friendly dog.

History: Tiggles’ owner died and so she is looking for her new home

Mercury is an extremely affectionate and large 8 year old male cat with short black and white hair.

His previous owner has had a grandchild arrive and Mercury likes more mature humans, so he is looking for a new loving home.

He purrs like a tractor when being patted and he’s very playful.

He is fine to be picked up (if you’re strong) and he likes sitting on the couch or a lap for pats.

He is a confident cat.

Given the chance he’ll cuddle up next to you in bed at night.

Mercury would suit a home with school-aged children or older. He would like to be the only pet. He has a particular dislike for dogs and will let them know in no uncertain terms to keep away from him.

Mercury is desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, flea-treated and wormed and comes with a week’s worth of free Royal Canin food.

New Bylaw requiring cats to be desexed and microchipped by 23 September 2027.

Attention cat owners in the Ashburton District: the new Keeping of Animals, Bee, and Poultry Bylaw 2026 comes into effect on 1 December 2026!

From 23 September 2027, cat owners will need to desex and microchip their cat and register the microchip on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (with exemptions in place for registered breeding animals or for the health and welfare of the cat).

Ensuring our companion cats are desexed is good for cat welfare and helps address the problems of too many unplanned litters of kittens needing help each year or ending up as strays. We also know microchips that are registered with up-to-date owner information help us get cats back home to their families when they are scanned.
