Police remind the public to be vigilant of scammers pretending to be Police officers.

We are aware there are may be several varieties of scams claiming to be Police or other government agencies doing the rounds at any one time.

This week, Police have been notified of another version where a person rings claiming to be a detective, investigating another person using your identity.

The conversation will move towards discussing financial access points, such as bank accounts or cryptocurrency. They will almost always be reluctant to provide you with details.

The caller will try to obtain your email address, and follow up with a “confirmation email” from a bogus email domain.

While the methods and cover stories may alter, Police and other government agencies will NEVER contact you out of the blue seeking your passwords, personal, credit card or banking details.

Police recommend taking a cautious approach to any unsolicited phone calls or emails. Check domain names of email addresses, and never click on any links on an unverified email or text message.

If you receive a scam email you can either forward the spam email to the Department of Internal Affairs directly at [email protected] or use their online reporting portal https://www.reportspam.co.nz

Information on other scams currently operating can be found on the Consumer Protection NZ website: www.consumerprotection.govt.nz/general-help/scamwatch

We will be at the Waimakariri Volunteer Expo representing North Canterbury Neighbourhood Support, so pop in and say hi! 👋

Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community while also gaining new skills, meeting people, and trying something new.

📍 Friday 6 March
🕓 4pm – 7pm
📍 Rangiora Library

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering or are curious about what’s out there, this expo is a great opportunity to meet a range of local organisations all in one place.

You’ll find groups from areas like emergency services, social services, environmental projects, community safety, arts, and more.

There are so many different ways you can get involved, for example:
• Supporting or mentoring others
• Helping cook community meals
• Volunteering in an op shop
• Joining community gardening projects
• Reception or admin support
• Driving people to appointments
• Assisting during civil emergencies
• Joining the volunteer fire brigade
• Helping connect neighbours in your street

Even a small amount of time can make a big difference in our community 💛

🚒 When the siren sounds in Amberley - this is what it really looks like. ❤️

We’re resharing this from Amberley Volunteer Fire Brigade because it’s such an honest reminder of what volunteer life involves.

When that pager goes off, its neighbours leaving dinner on the table, stepping out of work, organising childcare in seconds - and turning up for our community without hesitation.

We are incredibly lucky to have people like this serving North Canterbury. Thank you for everything you do seen and unseen. 👏

It’s also a timely reminder for all of us to do our part:

✅ Make sure your house number is clearly visible from the road.
✅ Know your neighbours and have each other’s contact details.
✅ Have a simple household emergency plan.
✅ And if you haven’t already, consider joining Neighbourhood Support
[email protected]

Strong communities aren’t built during emergencies - they’re built before them.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering with the brigade, they meet Mondays at 7pm and would love to chat.
