Our Tohunga Tūmau 2026 haerenga is officially underway! ✨

Yesterday our rōpū travelled to Whangārei to settle into our whare for the big week ahead. With this year’s Tohunga Tūmau - Puanga Matariki Dinner being hosted here in Te Tai Tokerau, we spent our first day reconnecting through waiata, sharing kai, and strengthening our whanaungatanga bonds. We are also incredibly privileged to have our rangatira Uncle Joe McLeod, alongside us as we begin yet another journey into the wonderful world of kai. 💚

Dressed proudly in their kākahu, today our tai tamariki were pōwhiri-ready! With their waiata tautoko well practised as we were welcomed onto Te Puna o Te Mātauranga Marae alongside the Tohunga Tūmau whānau to begin this years kaupapa. 🏠
Ngā mihi nui ki ngā hapū o Whangārei for your manaakitanga and welcome. 🙏🏽

It was inspiring to hear from the incredible Māori chefs who will be guiding and mentoring us throughout the next few days, learning more about their journeys and passion for kai. 🥗

To finish the day, our rangatahi took on The Great Rangatahi Ora Tohunga Tūmau Cook-Off 2026, creating a three-course meal that showcased their creativity, teamwork and growing culinary skills ahead of the exciting week to come. 🔪🍽️

It’s event day! 🏆

Today our rangatahi are on the ground supporting our Tohunga Tūmau chefs and the Duke of Marlborough team to deliver the Te Ahuwhenua Trophy Awards Dinner. 🍽️

Working alongside some of Aotearoa’s finest chefs and helping to feed 750 manuhiri from across the motu is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. 🙏🏽🤍

We’re incredibly proud of our rangatahi and grateful to everyone who has welcomed them into this kaupapa.

Today, some of our Rangatahi Ora kaimahi joined the incredible team of chefs to prepare food for the upcoming Te Ahuwhenau Trophy Awards Dinner being held in Whangārei.

With 750 guests expected at tomorrow’s event, today was all about preparation, teamwork and ensuring everything is ready for the evening.

🌊🐋 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐡𝐢 𝐎𝐫𝐚 | 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐡 🐋🌊

On Tuesday last week, our Rangatahi Ora volunteers completed Project Jonah Marine Mammal Medic training. 💯

This kaupapa helps equip our team with the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond should any tohorā or aihe strand along our coastline here in Te Tai Tokerau. 🌊

It was an incredible opportunity to deepen our understanding of marine mammal welfare and strengthen our ability to support these taonga species when they need us most. 🐋

Over the years Rangatahi Ora have been growing a team of rangatahi and pakeke who are ready and able to respond when needed. 🧳

Ngā mihi nui to the awesome facilitators Louisa and Darren, PJ Volunteer Elijah, and to Shelley, Jess & the Department of Conservation for supporting this important training. 🙏🏾

The final day of our wānanga celebrated everything we had learnt over the weekend. It brought us together in the spirit of manaakitanga through our hākari, where our rangatahi, kaimahi, whānau, and hau kāinga shared the kai Māori gathered, prepared, and cooked throughout the weekend. 🌿🍽️

Tēnei te mihi ki ngā ringaringa, ki ngā waewae katoa o te kaupapa nei. To every hand and every heart who contributed to this beautiful wānanga, we thank you. 🙌🏾🙏🏽

Today we worked together to prepare kai for tomorrow’s hākari. 🤍

We completed weaving rourou kai baskets, both square and rectangular, that will hold our kai in the hāngī as a natural alternative to tinfoil. We also learnt how to create natural plates using tī kōuka and harakeke, reminding us how resourceful our tūpuna were and their deep respect for te taiao. 🌿🧺

Uncle Joe McLeod guided our rōpū in naming each rongoā we harvested inanahi and matching its whakapapa and medicinal properties alongside our kai, from the whenua, moana, and rangi. This strengthened our understanding of how everything is connected. 🌏

Some of our experienced rangatahi stepped into leadership today, guiding pakeke in weaving rourou and supporting the preparation of kai in the wharekai. It was beautiful to see mātauranga shared across generations. ✨

Our rourou are now filled and ready, awaiting the hāngī tomorrow morning. 🍽️
