Innovative Young Minds

Innovative Young Mind's programmes encourage young women in Years 11 and 12 to explore science, technology, engineering & mathematics opportunities.

During IYM's programmes, participants will be exposed to eye-opening and inspiring science and technology content and will learn about the wide range of research and career opportunities available in STEMM. Participants will also make lasting friendships with like-minded young women who share a passion for STEMM! IYM's programmes are only open to young women, because females are underrepresented in the STEMM sector and we want to change that. Our goal is to inspire a new generation of female innovators and industry leaders.

This Spotlight is on Alumnae Caitlin Berquist. She did IYM Online in Year 12 in 2019.

IYM was her way of testing the ground before she committed to a career she wasn’t sure she wanted.

Each year at IYM Online and IYM Residential we run an Innovation Challenge thanks to our amazing trustee Paul Newsom.

The 2026 IYM Residential Innovation Challenge asked students to tackle fire detection head-on, sponsored by Pertronic Industries, the Wellington-based company behind the fire alarm systems protecting many of New Zealand's new commercial buildings.

Congratulations to Mia, Samara, Lucy, Aya and Natalie who won the challenge. Read more in our latest newsletter https://www.iym.org.nz/post/eight-teams-three-real-fire-safety-problems-four-minutes-to-convince-the-judges.
