What a fantastic weekend at the Hawera A&P show. Thank you to all the shed members who took time out of their weekend to lend a hand at the shed over the weekend. And thank you to everyone who attended the show and came to see what we had on offer. It was wonderful to see and chat to everyone as they made their way around. It had to be one of the best shows weekends we have had for a while and even the weather was well behaved.
Thanks everyone, we all did well.

Recently we had the privilege of being able to help the Hawera St John's cadets with some of their badge work. Along with their leaders and parents the cadets built kitsets of animal style planters and trebuchets (catapults) over 2 evenings. Learning how to use various tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, drills and staple guns.
Day 1 was noisy with construction and laughing along with a bit of frustration.
Day 2 was quieter with decoration and fine tuning. All trebuchets where balanced and tested for accuracy, of course.

Thanks to shed members Andy, Kyle and Alison for giving up their evenings to support and guide the cadets.

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the recent passing of Alan Schicker. Alan spent many hours pottering around the shed, often the first member to arrive. He was a wealth of knowledge and was always willing to share what he knew. When he was no longer able to participate on the shop floor, he still made time to come in and enjoy a cuppa and a chat. He was always keen to know what everyone else was doing. He even served on the committee. When he was downsizing his own workshop, he donated many of his tools to the shed, including his big carpenter's tool box, which he had used during his building days. So we offer our heartfelt condolences to his family. Alan will be missed but never forgotten. He was a legend of a man.

Here's a recent little project we were asked to undertake.
We were approached by St Joseph's school and asked if we could could make 10 prayer tables and 11 crosses. Could we possibly make them out of timber salvaged from the demolition of the old school building. We of course said yes sure we can do that for you, then we cringed when we saw the state of the timber they hoped we could use. Full of rot, nails, bolts and riddled with borer but the guys persisted and through de-nailing and milling they managed to find enough good timber.
Then they had to get through the next hurdle which was running out of clamps the right size. With 10 tables to put together every clamp that that could be used was used.
But the struggles didn't stop there because you see we had a deadline. All 10 tables and 11 crosses needed to be completed and collected before the schools 150 years celebrations.
So we put our heads down and got into it and we got the job done with just a couple of days to spare.
The photos show an example of the finished products and one very happy school principal.

Congratulations to St Joseph's school on your 150 years milestone.

Hawera Community Shed is very pleased to have been asked to undertake this project.

In memory of Ian Dudley

We are deeply saddened to share that Ian Dudley—past committee member, Shed Co-ordinator, and a much-valued member of MenzShed Hāwera—passed away yesterday. Ian gave his time, skills, and heart to our Shed and our community. His cheeky smile will always be in our thoughts.

Our thoughts are with Ian’s whānau and friends at this difficult time.

Ian's funeral is to be held at the Hawera Fire Station on Saturday 20th Sept at 11am

Peter is currently designing our new artwork which will replace the sign on the outside of the shed and on our letter head and other marketing materials. We are thinking about also putting this signage on the Savage Club Hall to raise awareness of the Shed. The Shed is still affiliated to Menzshed N...
