Taranaki Timebank Members of a Timebank exchange skills, time and knowledge. We use time instead of money as a currency. Everyone has talents and abilities to share.

Rārangahia Tātou - Putting the unity back in CommUNITY TARANAKI TIMEBANK

Trade your time, skills, knowledge & experience and get help you need that will make life easier for you and your whānau. We all have skills to share with each other, and in Taranaki Timebank, we trade in the precious currency of time rather than money, and in the process build community connection and resilience, social jus

tice and equality. Aroha and manaakitanga, caring, are key. Taranaki Timebank members gift our time, and earn that same amount of time back, to use it for something we need done or help with. We help each other out with all kinds of tasks including but not limited to: gardening, admin tasks, cooking, craft, coaching, wellness sessions, IT skills, walking buddies, decluttering, running errands, holding working bees, or something as simple as having a cuppa. Whenever you gift your time, you will be credited back in the same amount of hours, which you can then "spend" on any assistance offered that you may need or enjoy, from any of the other Timebank members. We also offer events and have started Upsewing Taranaki (launched in Hāwera but coming to other areas) as a vehicle to keep textiles out of landfills,
foster creativity and community connection, and normalise use of te reo Māori in the wider community. Timebank Taranaki values whatever it takes to raise healthy, happy children, build strong whānau/families, revitalise neighbourhoods, intercultural understanding and collaboration, opportunities to advance social justice and make the planet sustainable. Learn more and book for a Get Started session at taranakitimebank.info. Our members' website is also useful to understand how we operate is taranaki.timebanks.org. Contact [email protected] for more information. Nau mai, Haere mai. All are welcome.

Got some cleaning energy or in need of some to Trade?

Comment below to let us know what things or doings you're requesting help with this week. Anyone else have a gross microwave? I was too grossed out for a before pic!

Crop Swap Hawera is a member of Taranaki Timebank and often host speakers before a swap to share info on plants, gardening, and most recently, a talk from Ron about fermenting. He shared how he makes kimchi and sauerkraut and showed off his fancy fermenting crock (pictured, green crock, kimchi and red cabbage sauerkraut).

Recently Pip did a trade with Ella for some wool.
Wool is a fantastic mulch, trapping moisture in the soil and preventing weeds, so Pip has been spreading it around her raised vege beds. Tucking them up for winter means a much easier spring.

Now to see how Ella spends the Time she earned!

What have you got to Trade?
Trading time instead of $ in NZ since ages ago (more than 20 years!).

Comment below to let us know what things or doings you've got on offer this week. Or maybe it's a request for a worm farm?

Timebank Members trade time instead of money for goods and services, they spend this time as they like. We have an app to keep track of everything, super easy!

Pictured: portable worm farm (worms hate to get too hot in summer when they can dry out and in winter if it's frosty it's good to have them sheltered), worm farm has wheels, a handle, a hinged lid and a drip tray to catch worm wee in the bottom.

Upsewing Taranaki:
Another successful Upsewing Session tonight in Hāwera! We've spent a few months improving our techniques every fortnight and learning how to use one machine (from home or at Upsewing). Tonight most of us made a "boxy" bag with a zip and lining. All made from discarded zips and fabric otherwise heading for landfill.
Upsewing = Upcycling textiles (those that wanted to work on another project were welcome to do that too!)
Big shout out to Leah for trouble shooting and bringing her trial bags. She taught us what to do with our other mentors support. We're very lucky to have such a fantastic group, see you all in two weeks 3rd June 6:30-8:30pm.

This practice session using difficult material turned into a cute zip up bag, utilizing all sorts of new skills.

Bring your own machine or borrow one of ours, 6.30pm start until 8.30pm. 202 High Street, Hāwera - Hapori Hub.

ALL WELCOME! You do NOT need to be “fit” or stay for the full 2 hours. Any help is MUCH APPRECIATED! 10am (or later) - Meet us at the end of Scott Street (at 2 Scott St) for a kōrero - briefing. Look for the Sustainable Taranaki flag!

BYO gloves & buckets if possible, but we'll provide some if needed! + BYO gumboots if possible! Some sections might be muddy.

12pm (or earlier) - Meeting back to drop off all the trash collected (we will separate all items to divert as much as we can from the landfill)

to clean this location the best we can
to divert trash from the landfill

to create a fun and meaningful event for families to connect with the environment and take action towards bettering sustainability/conservation
See you on Saturday 30 May. 10am (or later!) at the Scott St Walkway! **

** This event is weather-dependent and may be postponed. A decision will be made 48h before the event. Stay tuned!

Our Make Your Own Top Workshop had some lovely creations on Saturday.

Trish took 3 tops and turned them into this cute compilation!

Pip made a lovely blue number with 2 tops that didn't quite sit right.

Thanks Barbara for your fantastic teaching of this workshop.

TTB is more than just an alternate economy, it’s about UNITY in commUNITY, making connections and friendships that grow 💗🌺 And with those friendships we naturally start just helping each other out, swapping veges back and forth, catching a ride etc and forget about the TTB link & hours!

But what we do is far wider than the number of hours we count (although important!) it’s the ripple effect, a seed that is planted and a way to pay it forward, knowing someone will help you too 🤗 We learn and grow together sharing knowledge & resources & also through our workshops & working bees.

I want to share some of my own recent experiences showing Timebank in action and why it appeals to me….share your story in the comments section and/or message me to highlight your profile!

*** *** *** *** ***

Recently I saw an advert for bulk sewing supplies & asked my TTB friend in that town to collect & she dropped off next time she was here. I rescued what i liked & brought the rest to Upsewing for the ladies to pick & choose for TTB credits. No doubt they will earn their TTB credits back sewing for our next project! 🧵🪡

Another example; a long time TTB connection popped up with a bulk lot of preserving jars & thought of me first, and of course I’ve already passed some on to another TTB member who I knew would appreciate them 🤗

No doubt someone from TTB will pass me some summer fruit which I’ll preserve in my jars & pass to another TTB member in trading…and so the cycle continues.
