Taranaki is still under MetService's Heavy Rain and Strong Wind Watches for most of today (Sunday) as part of the Cyclone Vaianu weather system which is now tracking further down the east coast of New Zealand.

What this means for us?
▪️We can still expect periods of strong wind and heavy rain throughout today and into the evening
▪️While the more severe weather is expected to affect parts of the east coast, we’re not completely out of the clear yet
▪️Conditions may still be changeable, so it’s worth staying aware

We’re continuing to monitor the situation closely and will share updates if anything changes.

Weather events can always change quickly and taking time to get prepared is always worthwhile. Being ready means you're better off when something does affect us.

We’re monitoring Cyclone Vaianu as it moves towards New Zealand, with wind and rain expected to reach Taranaki from Sunday.

There's still some uncertainty in the intensity and the impacts for us locally but it's a good reminder to be prepared for potential power outages and surface flooding around the region.

Take some time while its calm over the next few days to get prepared.

Preparing for no power

➡️If the power goes out, eat the food from your fridge first, then your freezer. Then eat the food in the cupboard or your emergency kit.
➡️Use torches or battery powered devices for lighting instead of candles. Don’t use candles and oil lamps if possible.
➡️Turn off appliances to avoid damage when power returns
➡️Fully charge your devices and consider having a spare battery or mobile power pack
➡️Know how to override your garage door
➡️Have a stock of food that doesn’t need to be cooked or something to cook your food on (gas barbecue or camp stove). Don’t forget food for babies and pets.
➡️Check on neighbours especially older or vulnerable people
➡️If you or someone in your house is medically dependant on power, check with your doctors and power company to ensure there is a plan in place

A big THANK YOU to our South Taranaki community for your fabulous support of our recent Community Family Fun Day. Thanks to the Toughest Firefighters who joined us, the food trucks, market stall holders, other Not-for-Profit organisations, our partners NZ Police, Ingram's, Hawera Lions, Hawera Aquatic Centre, Metcalfe Real Estate, our sponsors and Volunteers. We were lucky with the weather, which saw a lot of people enjoying themselves. Please support the following businesses who have helped us to bring the Community Family Fun Day to all residents as a FREE ENTRY day out of fun, food & entertainment.
