Today we honour the Apostle of Charity, a priest who spent his life seeking out the poor, the forgotten, the imprisoned and the sick, and treating them as Christ himself.

May his example stir us to look around our own streets, families and communities and ask: who is hungry, lonely or overlooked today? Even a small act of kindness, done with love, continues his work.

“Go to the poor and you will find God.”

Hamilton pensioners are going hungry

St Vincent de Paul is now delivering food parcels to 90+ pensioners every fortnight. 80% of the charity’s parcels go to people whose only income is the pension.
Some have about $20 left after rent and power. Some say a community lunch is the only meal they get. Some have come in asking for underwear.

Blessed Frédéric Ozanam – Feast Day

Today we celebrate Blessed Frédéric Ozanam (1813–1853), the 20-year-old law student and scholar who co-founded the Society of St Vincent de Paul in Paris in 1833.

A professor, journalist and advocate for justice, he didn’t just write about the poor, he visited them in their homes, bringing practical help and friendship. That small group of students became a worldwide movement.
At Vinnies Hamilton we continue his legacy every day through our shops, food parcels, home visits and community support. Frédéric showed us that real faith is lived in action.

9 weeks ago, our food caravan crew came across a group of men living in the park. They’d been given notice to move on and had run out of options, nowhere left to go.
We couldn’t just walk away. So we awhi’d them and opened our doors. That’s what community looks like, right?

What happened next warmed our hearts completely. Those same men invited us to a beautiful 3 course meal they cooked and paid for themselves. We sat together, we laughed, we ate like kings… and we left feeling full in every way.

To us, they’re no longer “the guys from the park” they’re our friends. And honestly? The best tenants we’ve ever had. Go figure 🤭

Sometimes people don’t need us to fix everything. They just need someone to listen, to believe in them, and to show they’re worth the effort.

We’re so grateful for these real connections and the powerful lessons they bring.

Big congratulations to Issra! 🏆

During National Volunteer Week, themed “Your Year to Volunteer”, we are celebrating Issra as runner up in the Volunteering Waikato Awards! Her dedication and aroha at Vinnies Glenview over the years continues to make such a difference for our pensioners, families, and rangatahi. Shes a true champion in our community and the best!
