Kelly Wealleans, People and Compliance Manager of Sorted Logistics identified the following key aspects of how HR creates strategic impact to an organisation.

Listen to an excerpt of her segment at the recent HRMS Industry Speaker Series sponsored by the HRNZ Waikato Branch.

🌟 HR plays a vital role in aligning its work and initiatives with the overall business strategy and goals set by senior leadership. Here’s how:

✅ Ensuring the right skills and talent are in place to achieve strategic goals
✅ Implementing technology and processes that support the business strategy
✅ Driving change management to embed strategic changes
✅ Providing data and analytics to senior leaders for informed decision-making

Key focus areas for HR include:

💼 Employee wellbeing and engagement
🤝 Coaching and developing managers to execute the strategy
📝 Administering HR processes like contracts, policies, and remuneration
🌱 Talent management—recruitment, training, and succession planning
👥 Handling employee relations and disciplinary matters

As data and analytics become increasingly important, HR must deliver meaningful insights to the business, including turnover, retention, performance data, and the impact of HR initiatives.

Kelly Wealleans, the People and Compliance Manager of Sorted Logistics explained that while "human resources" (HR) has traditionally been the common term, the industry is increasingly adopting names like "people and culture" or "people and capability" to describe the function. She believes these terms reflect a more comprehensive view, one that goes beyond managing human resources to include the broader "people" aspects of a business—such as employee wellbeing, safety, and a stronger focus on creativity and strategy.

Kelly’s team, named "People, Safety, and Compliance," was deliberately chosen to highlight this wider scope. Their responsibilities span across employee wellbeing, coaching and mentoring leaders, implementing policies, managing remuneration, training and development, recruitment, employee relations, and leveraging data and analytics.

She stressed that HR, or "people" teams, must be closely aligned with the overall business strategy, ensuring that people-centric initiatives, change management, and data-driven insights contribute to achieving the company's goals. According to Kelly, the role of HR has evolved from being primarily an administrative support function to becoming a more strategic partner, where HR professionals are seen as coaches and advisors who have a meaningful "seat at the table."
