Workwise attended the Platform Trust Members' Day yesterday in Wellington, connecting with colleagues and organisations from across the mental health and addiction sector, getting motivated, sharing ideas and taking learnings back to our home organisations.

We enjoyed hearing from guest speakers about how to approach the year ahead for service delivery and relationships, finding opportunities, putting forward solutions, and doing the best we can with technology - without forgetting the important human connection behind everything we do.

Workwise has welcomed James Scarlett as our new General Manager to oversee the Auckland and Waikato teams, and to join our senior leadership team.

James has joined us from Pathways, so he may be a familiar face to many across the mental health space and clinical services in Auckland.

With over a decade’s experience in mental health, addiction services and youth development, James describes himself as a registered addictions clinician but a youth worker at heart.

“I look forward to connecting with people and employers in my new capacity – and seeing how we can journey with tāngata whai ora to find purpose, dignity and opportunities,” says James.

A long-anticipated moment happened last week when the Workwise teams gathered at Lake Karapiro - our first time to get together in many years.

The day was a balance of connection, reflection, celebration and inspiration – themes that were echoed by the serene backdrop of the lake.

From shared kōrero and whanaungatanga, guest speakers, presentations and time to reflect on our 25-year journey, it was all about strengthening the connections that support both our mahi and each other.

During the day, we heard from guest speakers who shared their stories on leadership, and why supporting people with employment really matters.

We are so proud of Workwise and each person’s commitment to our work. Thank you for making the day a special Workwise moment!

As we approach the end of 2025, it’s a perfect time to pause, reflect and give thanks.

This past year, Workwise supported 541 people into 655 jobs, with 1,603 referrals for 1,566 individuals. These numbers represent real lives changed, and that’s something to be proud of.

It has also been a year of change and celebration. We marked 25 years of Workwise, connecting across the country to honour this milestone.

To all those that we have supported, collaborated with and worked alongside, thank you for your creativity, determination, skills, energy, guidance, innovation and willingness to find work and wellbeing.

Workwise offices will be closed for the holiday period from 5pm, Tuesday 23 December, and will reopen at 8.30am on Wednesday 7 January, 2026.

If you need to talk, free call or text 1737 anytime.

Workwise has been collaborating with housing services since 2017, and these days, you’ll find our employment consultants / kairapu tūranga mahi integrated with The People’s Project teams in Hamilton and Tauranga, and with LinkPeople’s Housing First and Rapid Rehousing teams in South Auckland.

When we first started working alongside Housing First services, there were some key things that made it work:
- We leveraged off the trust that people already had in their housing provider.
- We supported people in a familiar space where they felt comfortable.
- We worked together to remove barriers for people so that the chance of success was higher.
- We believed in their potential.

This past year, people secured a wide range of jobs, many impressively entering full-time work. One of the people we supported was Saskia – and you can now read her story on our website.

Wow, 20 years! This month, the Workwise Taranaki team celebrates 20 years of supporting people with their employment journeys.

We recently gathered together at Taranaki Base Hospital to recognise our meaningful partnership with Health NZ - Taranaki community mental health and addiction teams, paying tribute to the many people - including past and present leaders and staff, peer support and people with lived experience - employers, and other community and support services.

“At the heart of this celebration are the people who’ve used our services. Their courage, commitment and success are what we honour today. Without them, this work would have no meaning,” said Tyron Pini, Workwise Chief Executive.

We also took a moment to acknowledge Ross Ekdahl, Manager of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Taranaki for his efforts and leadership over many years (see photo).

It was a highlight to hear Ross talking from the heart about the reality of the work to get here - and the value he sees in having employment consultants from Workwise as part of the community mental health team and service.

Connecting and reflecting together gives us the motivation and shared sense of purpose to drive us forward – so, here’s to the next 20 years!

Every day, Workwise employment consultants are working with people to positively influence their employment journeys. We’re fostering strong relationships with employers when we support a new person to join their team, and to ensure people are thriving while at work.

“We firmly believe that everything we do has a bigger impact than on just the one person. Our outcomes are bigger than the individual.” - Tyron Pini, Chief Executive.

Each time we hear the story of a person’s success, we’re inspired to do even better! Last year, we supported 2,400 people to secure more than 900 work, study or other placements within a tough labour market. 44% of the people we supported were young people (under 30 years of age).

Although our results tell a story, we know that everything we do has a wider impact than just on the individual we’re supporting – it’s about people, their lives and their families.

Take a moment to visit our website where you can read the full story and learn more about our work over the past year (see link in comments).
