NZ Landcare Trust

NZ Landcare Trust NZ Landcare -Ngā Matapopore Whenua works with farmers, landowners, iwi, and community groups to promote sustainable land and water management in New Zealand.

NZ Landcare Trust works with farmers, landowners and community groups to improve the sustainability of our landscapes and waterways.

“Sustainable land management through community involvement”. How do we do this? The first step is to build good relationships based on trust and mutual respect. Our Regional and Project Coordinators understand the needs of farmers and rural communities, and work cl

osely with them. Events, such as field days and workshops are a great way of getting people together to share information. In many cases members of the scientific community will present the latest research and answer questions. Another key area is funding and financial support. NZ Landcare Trust has extensive knowledge and experience applying for grants from DOC, MfE and MPI, and understand what is needed to submit a successful bid. Looking further ahead, we can also provide advice on maintaining project momentum. Providing information and encouragement is very important but we go even further... we are not afraid to roll up our sleeves and get out in the field. Our Coordinators regularly take an active role on working parties, helping with ‘hands on’ work such as w**d clearance and native planting.

Healthy ecosystems are the heart of a thriving Aotearoa. They absorb carbon, regulate water, and protect our communities.

Our forests, oceans, wetlands, and soils are vital carbon sinks, playing a crucial role in combating climate change. Restoring these ecosystems not only strengthens our environment, but also creates jobs and supports local economies.

Nature is a taonga (treasure) that enhances our wellbeing, improves air quality, and builds resilience in our towns and cities.

Did you know? Protecting forests alone helps prevent disaster losses worth tens of billions of dollars every year.

This World Environment Day, let’s come together to care for Papatūānuku and create a sustainable future for generations to come.

During heavy rainfall, water can surge off farmland, carrying soil, nutrients, and contaminants into waterways, placing additional pressure downstream.

Detainment bunds offer a practical solution to slow this flow. By temporarily holding water for a few days and releasing it gradually after the storm, these structures help:

• Retain more soil and nutrients on-farm
• Prevent wetlands from becoming clogged
• Reduce flood damage for both nature and communities downstream

As weather extremes become more frequent, detainment bunds are becoming an increasingly vital tool in adapting our landscapes to these challenges.

Keen to learn more? In the latest episode of our People Helping Nature podcast, we speak with Laura Simpson from the Mangaone West Catchment Group about their innovative use of retrofitted detainment bunds.

We had a fantastic time at our wetland planting event in Little River!

It was amazing to see students, volunteers, and the community come together to restore this beautiful and significant landscape. The native species we planted will help boost biodiversity and improve water quality for generations.

A huge thank you (Ngā mihi) to everyone who came and lent a hand, including the Bupa Foundation, Little River School, Wairewa Mahinga Kai Catchment Group, and the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust. Your energy and support made all the difference!
