Mayor for a Day Sienna, of Paroa School - Greymouth met electrician Natasha at Aotea Electric today. She also judged a manu contest at the Westland Recreation Centre, visited the Greymouth Library, and did media interviews.

Not one, but TWO! 🙌

We’re so grateful to Scott Secker Builder for recently taking on not one, but TWO of our MTFJ candidates!

Today we are out delivering tools and checking in with both of them to see how their first couple of weeks have been going. It’s awesome to hear how they’re settling in, getting stuck into the mahi and enjoying their new opportunities.

A huge thank you to Scott Secker Builders for backing our young people and giving them the chance to get their foot in the door, gain valuable experience and build their future careers.

This is what MTFJ is all about — connecting our young people with local employers and creating real opportunities.

Are you passionate about helping young people reach their goals and find their pathway into employment?

Grey District Council is looking for a practical, people-focused Youth Facilitator to join the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) team.

This is a hands-on community role where you’ll work alongside young people aged 18–24, local employers, training providers and community organisations to help overcome barriers, create opportunities and support young people into sustainable employment.

The role includes:
Supporting young people with their employment goals and pathways
Connecting young people with local employers and opportunities
Linking people with training, work experience and education
Supporting young people before and after they start work
Building strong relationships with local businesses and organisations
Promoting MTFJ across our community

If you’re someone who builds great relationships, is organised, adaptable and enjoys making a real difference in the community, we’d love to hear from you!

📍 Based in the Grey District
⏰ 30–40 hours per week

Morgan started working at Total Glass
in Greymouth three months ago, and hasn’t looked back.

“The people are really nice and supportive, and every day I am learning new stuff.”

He is one of 44 young people the Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) Grey District has supported into employment in the year to June.

Mayor Tania Gibson encouraged more employers to reach out before beginning their recruitment process.

“We work with many supportive local employers. While times are challenging, we can provide support not only to young people entering employment, but also to businesses willing to give them an opportunity.

“This support can include assistance with driver licensing and essential tools, as well as access to government funding and incentives for eligible employers.”

Staff have worked alongside many businesses for years, helping them fill vacancies while supporting young people to successfully enter the workforce.

Many of our young people are not yet work-ready and need support and encouragement as they take their first steps into employment. Through the Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs, we have the opportunity to help them build confidence, develop workplace skills, and connect with meaningful employment.
