Today, a hearing was held in the Masterton District Court with Te Kooti Whenua Māori regarding the trusteeship of Hurunuiōrangi X (Part) Māori Reservation.

We are proud to share that Kim Smith, PJ Devonshire, and Mei Manaia Matiaha-Stevens have now been officially confirmed as trustees through the Māori Land Court.

This is an important step for our marae, and we acknowledge our whānau for their ongoing support as we continue the mahi of strengthening and serving Hurunuiōrangi Marae.

Charles Rooking Carter Awards 2026 🌸🌼

Last Saturday evening, Hurunuiōrangi Marae were once again proud to walk alongside our Carterton community at the Charles Rooking Carter Awards.

We acknowledge all of the finalists and winners celebrated on the night, and the many ways their mahi, service and contribution continue to uplift and inspire our community.

As mana whenua, it was an honour to lead the mihi whakatau and welcome MC Miriama Kamo to this bi-annual celebration of local excellence.

This kaupapa holds a special place for our marae, with our late Nanny Lou Cook having served on the committee in its earlier years. We are honoured to continue that relationship and uphold the links that have long connected Hurunuiōrangi Marae with the wider Carterton community and the Carterton District Council.

Hurunuiōrangi Marae is incredibly proud to congratulate Aunty Charmaine Kawana as our 2026 Living Taonga Award recipient.

A kaupapa ora hosted by Kahungunu ki Wairarapa; Recognises and acknowledges individuals who's service, leadership and committment continue to strengthen our marae and inspire future generations.

Aunty Charmaine has served our marae with dedication, humility and aroha. Over the years, she has stepped into many roles for the marae, including Secretary, Chairperson and Treasurer. Through each of these roles, she has helped carry the administrative, financial and leadership responsibilities that often sit quietly behind the scenes, but are so important to the life and wellbeing of our marae.

Aunty Charmaine contributed to the papakāinga development, supporting a kaupapa that continues to create pathways for whānau to return, live, connect and thrive on their whenua.

Her years of service remind us that our living taonga are not only those who stand at the front, but also those who have spent years holding the kaupapa from behind the scenes, ensuring our marae continues to stand strong today and for generations to come.

Aunty, we thank you for your quiet leadership, your unwavering service, and your love for Hurunuiōrangi Marae and our whānau.

E te Kahu Kiwi o Hurunuiōrangi, nei rā ngā oha nui ki ā koe x
