It was a privilege to welcome the Ngāti Kahungunu riders and whānau to Hurunuiōrangi Marae as they made their way south carrying the "Protect Te Tiriti" petition to Pōneke.

Their stay with us was short but beautiful - filled with whakapapa, kōrero, connection, laughter and manaakitanga. It was special to see our haukāinga come together to tautoko the kaupapa and stand alongside our people.

As they continue their journey to Parliament this morning, we send our aroha and mihi nui to all those who have ridden, supported and carried this kaupapa along the way.

Kia ora e te whānau,

Tomorrow, Monday 14 September, Ngāti Kahungunu horseback hīkoi will make its way through our rohe, carrying the “Protect Te Tiriti” petition from Waimārama to Parliament.

Stopping over at Hurunuiōrangi Marae, where they will stay overnight ahead of the final journey to Pōneke, to Pāremata on Tuesday 15th.

Whakatau at 3pm.

Tomorrow (Monday 14 Sept 2026), Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Inc horseback hīkoi travelling from Hawkes Bay to Parliament will arrive in Whakakoriori.
We are expecting them at Matua Pa, at 11am, they will hikoi via horse through town AFTER our Tamariki have completed their hīkoi for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori.
Following this, they will head to Hurunuiorangi Marae, where they will stay overnight, in preparation for the final hikoi into Pōneke & onto parliament grounds.

Last weekend, Hurunuiorangi Marae had the pleasure of hosting the Young Single Adults from the Masterton Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A big mihi to this awesome rōpū, who not only organised their stay but also offered to complete a service project while they were with us. They rolled up their sleeves and left our pā grounds looking ātaahua!

Thank you for your tautoko, your mahi and the great energy you brought to our marae. E kore e mutu ngā mihi ki a koutou! 🫶🏽
