Day 2 of our Education and Employment Wānanga!

A bit of a different start to our morning, with everyone pitching in to cook breakfast, set the table and enjoy kai together before heading off for some axe throwing and smash room action!

Sometimes the best learning happens outside of a classroom, through shared experiences, trying something new and having a bit of fun along the way.

A great way to wrap up another day with our rangatahi!

Day 1 of our Education and Employment Wānanga!

Following on from our recent noho, we’re continuing to build on the skills, confidence and goals our rangatahi have been working towards.

Today was all about exploring employment opportunities, recognising personal strengths and understanding some of the barriers young people face when entering the workforce.

A big thank you to the Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) and the Pathways REAL Team for sharing their knowledge and experience with our rangatahi.

We believe it’s important to bring in professionals who work in these fields every day, giving our young people the chance to hear different perspectives, gain real world knowledge and make connections with people who can support their next steps.

Another great opportunity for our rangatahi to learn, grow and build confidence in their futures!

Adrenaline Forest definitely tested a few of us.

For some, it was easy. For others, getting up there was already a win. But that’s what made it so good.

Everyone was backing each other, giving advice, having a laugh and helping each other push through when it got hard.

That’s a big part of leadership too. It’s not always about being the person in charge. It’s about backing your people, stepping up when someone needs you and being willing to challenge yourself too.

A few fears faced, a lot of laughs and another solid memory from our noho.

Big mihi to Andy for getting our ELEV8 crew out on the waka and showing them there’s a lot more to waka ama than just paddling.

Being on the awa takes a whole different set of skills. You’ve got to read the water, listen, trust your crew and find your rhythm together. If one person is doing their own thing, the whole waka feels it.

But the biggest takeaway was simple. Learn it, grow from it, then pass it on. Knowledge means more when you give it back to the next generation.

That’s how young people become the ones leading and teaching those coming up behind them.

During our noho, we introduced our ELEV8 rangatahi to a kaiako leading unique youth initiatives for his iwi, Ngati Toa
They connected his mahi with their own mentoring of younger rangatahi in Carterton. The lesson was you are never too young to give back. Then he shared of our support in mentoring him years ago, a surprise that brought that connection to life for our team.
His journey showed the power of investing in young people over time, those nurtured can become leaders who nurture others. ❤️

A big thank you to VOYCE and the Youth Hub for welcoming us and sharing korero on youth voice and issues close to our hearts.

Hikitia, our ELEV8 Leadership Academy leader, accepted the Royal Commission’s report into abuse in State care on our behalf, alongside other gifts.

The report gives us valuable insight into survivors’ experiences and lessons that help us strengthen our care, protect rangatahi and ensure their voices are heard.

Growing young leaders and strengthening youth voice. 🌱

Following our visit to Parliament, our first day of Noho started with visiting the new Children’s Commissioner Jane Searle and her team, sharing questions and hopes for young people throughout Aotearoa. Our korero focused on issues that are dear to young people.

One special moment was reconnecting with someone Jen mentored around 20 years ago, now contributing to the Children’s Commissioner’s team a wonderful reminder of the lasting value of investing in young people. This week we spend more time with others from that same generation now making a huge difference.

Through our ELEV8 Leadership Academy, we’re helping rangatahi build confidence, find their voice and contribute as the next generation of leaders.

Thank you to Jane and her team for listening and advocating for mokopuna, and to our young people for sharing their voices and vision. ❤️
