It was so special to see Te Wai-o-Hiharore filled with our whānau and mokopuna, enjoying the day together, sharing plenty of laughs and making memories.

He whanaunga nō Tūranga.
This morning we gathered.
The whenu of Hinehākirirangi were gathered within the paru of Karaua and woven together into a single kete.
As Taharakau reminded us this morning:
“Ka tikina ake rā ngā kupu kōrero, ngā kupu whakawhāiti tātou i tēnei rā, i ō tātou mātua tīpuna nā rātou tonu ēnei kupu i whakairoiro ki runga i tō tātou whenua.”
(Today we draw upon the words that bring us together, the words of our forebears, who themselves carved these words into our land.)
Long before the names and boundaries we organise ourselves by today, our people were connected across Tūranga by whakapapa.
Over time, lines have been drawn around us — iwi boundaries, land titles, organisations and other structures that can make it easy to see ourselves first as separate peoples.
Whakapapa remembers differently.
Today was a small opportunity to remember that.
He whanaunga tātou.
He uri nō Tūranga.

Ngā mihi nui e te whānau for coming along and making it such a fun and successful day for our mokopuna. It was awesome to see Te Wai-o-Hiharore full of whānau, laughter and activity.
