PĀNUI KI TE IWI
Te Kuri a Paoa - Rangihoua Ngahere Ora

E ngā uri o Te Kuri a Paoa, tēnā koutou katoa.

In May our Te Kura o te Muriwai mokopuna, pakeke and hapori opened the commencement of planting mahi with karakia, reaffirming our collective commitment to the restoration and protection of Rangihoua Pā and our pari-maunga, Te Kuri.

This panui is being sent to keep you updated on this kaupapa

🌱 Taiao & Planting Programme
The large scale native planting programme is progressing strongly:
• 12,000 natives have already been planted.
• 10,000 additional plants were delivered by helicopter.
• We remain on track to complete 43,000 plantings by the end of June

This mahi represents a significant step in restoring the ecological health and whakapapa of our whenua. The white boxes you see from Muriwai contain the trees being planted.

🛡 Rangihoua Pā Management Plan
Light fence materials have now landed on Rangihoua.
Pomana Contractors will undertake the full pā fencing works.
The pā site has been confirmed by Noel and others, ensuring alignment with kōrero tuku iho and cultural markers.
The approach is a less intrusive system to the pā; standards, wire and electric fencing, with grazing by sheep only.

🚪 Access
The Papatewhai access gate and code control management will sit with us.
TTPT (through Beth) will work with our whānau to develop a process to guide who enters, when, and for what purpose, ensuring safety, respect, and cultural integrity are maintained. We will work with Steve Sawyer from Ecoworks on this mahi.

🌿 Harakeke, Repo & Cultural Materials
Shaping of harakeke, kākaho and small repo areas is underway.
Our weavers have identified suitable harakeke cultivars for the area.
Creating spaces for mahi toi and natural restoration environments.

🪵 Poupou & Rākau Preparation
Poupou preparation continues through Maraetaha Inc.
Rākau has been sourced and will be moved to the coolstore for carving once milled.

🖼 Digitisation & Rangihoua Imaging
Digitisation and imaging discussions for Rangihoua Pā are progressing.
This work will support long term archival, education, and intergenerational storytelling.

🏞 Ātea & Site Development
Planning for shaping the ātea area is underway. We will keep you informed.

🌿 Rangihoua Advisory Rōpū
Mahi at Rangihoua Pā continues to progress through the Te Kuri Trust. A Ngāi Tāmanuhiri Advisory Rōpū has been established to help guide this kaupapa.
Whānau interested in supporting the future planning of Rangihoua are invited to register their interest by emailing [email protected].

💼 Whānau Feedback – Opportunities on Te Kuri
We have received feedback from whānau about ensuring Ngāi Tāmanuhiri whānau and businesses have visibility of opportunities arising from work undertaken on Te Kuri.

We acknowledge this feedback and are looking at ways to ensure whānau are kept informed of future opportunities through a fair and transparent process.

🚶‍♀️ Wānanga & Hīkoi
We look forward to walking the whenua together soon, holding our wānanga kōrero, and ensuring the whakaaro of whānau is carried forward.

Mauri tū, mauri ora.

Congratulations to Maraetaha Incorporation and GDC on this well-deserved recognition.

We also acknowledge our whānau Leon Tarsau, Hakim Smith and James Brown, whose commitment and contributions have helped make this kaupapa possible.

A special congratulations to our Ngāti Koata whānau on receiving the Mana Whenua Award. It was fantastic to reconnect and reflect on the journey we have shared, including your support with the translocation of tuatara back to Te Kurī in 2011. Those connections and relationships remain an important part of the success we celebrate today.

These achievements demonstrate what can be accomplished when iwi, whānau, communities, and partners come together with a shared vision for our environment and future generations.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.
