🏆 What an incredible honour! 🌿💚

We’re still buzzing after being awarded the Taylor Community Pride Shield at the Keep Dunedin Beautiful Awards last Friday!

We're incredibly grateful to Dunedin City Council and the wonderful Keep Dunedin Beautiful team for recognising the work happening at Open Valley Urban Ecosanctuary. A huge thank you to Mandy Mayhem Dunedin City Council and Dunedin Mayor Sophie Barker for celebrating the people and projects that make our communities so special. 💚

But most of all, this award belongs to our volunteers. 🌱

Every w**d pulled, tree planted, trap checked, rubbish collected, stream cared for, native seedling nurtured and hour spent helping out has made Open VUE what it is today. It’s the dedication, passion and generosity of our volunteers that makes a real difference to the awa, the ngāhere and the wildlife of North East Valley.

We couldn’t be more proud — or more grateful — to have such an amazing crew of people behind us. You are the reason we received this award. 🥹💚

Thank you for believing in what we’re doing and for showing, one little action at a time, what a community can achieve when it comes together.

🎉Mural Opening today!!!

Lara Hattingh has a new mural in the Alpine House (below Aster Café) in the Botanic Gardens!!

Today we celebrated it with her, the mural sponsors, and supporters. We shared speeches and had fun cutting the ribbon with comically large scissors. We shared kai together and spent time talking about the importance of art and environment 💚 Go check it out!

Congratulations to Anja Gray, who was commended in the Keep Dunedin Beautiful awards! Anja volunteered in our admin team for nearly two years which lead to hundreds of traps being installed, and several predators being removed from around the Kaikorai Stream. Great work Anja!

If your group is using practices that involve waste minimisation- diversion, recycling, repurposing, etc, you may be able to qualify for a Waste Minimisation Grant! Applications are open NOW until 25 September!

Congratulations to Dianne Clark for her Commended award at the Keep Dunedin Beautiful ceremony. Dianne was our first back yard trapper and has volunteered many hours to AKV, doing rubbish cleanups, flyer drops and supporting our meetings.

The word is out!!

We have some exciting news to share! Paul Southworth won the Individual Category at the Keep Dunedin Beautiful Awards!

Through his vision and leadership, Paul established Aroha Kaikorai Valley to create a healthier, more sustainable future for the Kaikorai Catchment. His passion for the environment has inspired people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved, from local businesses and schools to backyard trappers, volunteers, and community clean-up crews.

Under Paul's guidance, AKV has helped restore native biodiversity through predator control, native planting, habitat restoration, and waterway protection. Thanks to these efforts, native birdlife is returning and the ecological health of the valley continues to improve.

More than anything, Paul has built a movement. He brings people together, motivates them to take action, and shows us that every contribution matters. His dedication, energy, and belief in the community are helping create a greener, healthier Kaikorai Valley for future generations.

👏 Thank you, Paul, and congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

One of our recipients on Friday Night :)

A MASSIVE THANK YOU to all of our Good Deed and Feed volunteers past and present. Your amazing efforts were recognised last Friday evening with a ✨Highly Commended✨ at the Keep Dunedin Beautiful Award Ceremony in the Taylor Community Pride Shield category.

The best part was learning about the incredible mahi happening all around Ōtepoti to look after the whenua. From kids and their composting efforts, community murals, clearing prickly tracks, to building new coastal connections for generations to enjoy, we were blown away.

Congratulations to all the winners and award recipients, including our friends at The Halo Project for hosting so many of our Good Deed and Deeds across many years!! 💚
