South Otago High School Year 13 student Millie Scott recently had the opportunity to attend an Outward Bound course after receiving the Pukekoma Scholarship from the Clutha Foundation.
The scholarship helped Millie take part in one of New Zealand’s well-known outdoor education programmes, where students are challenged to step outside their comfort zones, work alongside others and discover what they are capable of.
For Millie, the experience was about much more than the activities themselves. While the course involved plenty of physical and mental challenges, she said the real value came from what those moments taught her.
“If you’re going to eat a frog, best not to look at it too long,” Millie reflected. “It sounds strange, but it simply means if you’ve got something difficult to do, don’t spend forever thinking about it. Just get stuck in, because the longer you wait, the harder it becomes.”
Looking back, Millie said Outward Bound was not really about the activity she was doing; the activities were the experiences that taught her resilience, teamwork, gratitude and confidence.
Millie’s time at Outward Bound is a reminder of the value of opportunities that encourage young people to challenge themselves and grow. With the support of the Pukekoma Scholarship and the Clutha Foundation, she has returned with lessons that will stay with her well beyond the course.

The Clutha Foundation is delighted to welcome Kate Flett-Scott as our new Donor Relations Coordinator.
Kate brings a genuine passion for building meaningful relationships and strengthening connections across our community. In her role, she will work closely with donors to ensure they feel valued, informed, and connected to the lasting impact their generosity makes possible.
Kate’s background in education and social services has given her extensive experience working with people, building strong relationships, and supporting positive community outcomes. We are pleased to welcome Kate to the team and look forward to the energy, experience, and dedication she will bring to the Foundation’s mission of supporting a thriving Clutha district.
Kate is based upstairs at Te Pou ĹŚ Mata-Au, so please do call in, say hello, and have a coffee when you have a chance.

What will your values leave behind?
It's a question more New Zealanders are considering, especially as they think about what really matters to them. Recent research shows nearly 7 in 10 people who left a gift in their will say their values drove that decision.

And, what does this tell us? Giving in your will isn't just a financial decision, it's a personal one that is shaped by the causes and communities that have mattered most along the way. For a growing number of New Zealanders, it's simply becoming part of how they think about their future.
September is Wills Month, and the Clutha Foundation are starting the conversation early. This kind of giving deserves more than a last-minute prompt.
