"My name is Lekshmi Subhash, a civil engineer from India, completed a masterโs in construction management in New Zealand. I discovered the Wesley Community Centre at a job fair in September 2024, where I began volunteering during the Diwali event. This experience helped me understand the local culture and feel a sense of belonging, which was further enhanced when I was recognised at the โCheers to 2024โ celebration.
In 2025, I engaged in various community events, enjoyed Zumba sessions, and participated in job search workshops, enriching my understanding of New Zealandโs culture. I highly recommend Wesley to newcomers, as it offers genuine friendships and networking opportunities.
Receiving a volunteer certificate boosted my confidence, contributing to my Distinguished Graduate Award at the University of Auckland. Through Wesley, I also connected with organizations like Age Concern and the Earth Action Trust, expanding my skills and professional network, making it a supportive second home that has significantly impacted my personal growth and career opportunities.
Volunteer work has played a crucial role in helping me secure a part-time position as a Zero Waste Coordinator with Earth Action Trust. I am truly grateful for the experiences and opportunities I have had at Wesley throughout this journey."
