Manuia le Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa!

This Samoa Language Week, we celebrate the richness of Gagana Samoa, Samoan culture, and the important role language plays in connecting people, communities, and generations.

This year's theme, “‘E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le 'nu'u” – “From the high mountains are the blessings of the village,” reminds us that strong communities are built on strong foundations, shared values, and collective wellbeing.

At ANCAD, we are also grateful for the leadership, wisdom, and service of our Samoan team members and governance leaders. This includes Pacific Capability Lead Clark Tuagalu, who leads culturally grounded capability and mentoring initiatives supporting Pacific organisations and leaders across Auckland; ANCAD Board Member Tuifa'asisina Maria Lafaele QSM, whose extensive leadership across Pacific health, community engagement, and governance continues to strengthen Pacific wellbeing and community aspirations across Aotearoa; and Pacific community leader Pale Sauni, whose decades of work across mental health, social services, education, and Pacific wellbeing have made a lasting contribution to Pacific communities in Aotearoa.

Their work reflects the spirit of this year’s Samoa Language Week theme: Recognising that strong communities are built through leadership, service, connection, and investing in future generations.

Great conversations, practical tools, and shared learning at today’s LiiFT Aotearoa workshop in Glenfield Community Centre focused on coaching for performance and building confidence and capability in developing people.

Participants explored ways to strengthen communication, support growth, encourage accountability, and create more effective and empowered teams within community organisations.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such an engaging and thoughtful session. A big shout out to our great presenter Damian D'Cruz from MindSpring. Community capability grows stronger when leaders invest in people. 💡

ANCAD CEO Fiona Brennan was delighted to attend and support *The Village of 12 Nights* by Glass Ceiling Arts Collective last week.

“A vibrant, moving and wonderfully clever performance — funny, heartfelt and deeply thought-provoking all at once. The energy, creativity and passion on stage were truly inspiring, and it beautifully showcased the remarkable talents of the performers,” Fiona reflected following the performance.

Congratulations to the cast, creators and everyone involved on such an outstanding community production and creative achievement. 👏

“Rhythms of Readiness – Stronger Together” was the theme of the recent Auckland Community Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Forum, bringing together nearly 200 emergency responders, volunteers, community organisations and local board representatives focused on strengthening resilience across Auckland.

ANCAD’s Eva Chen was pleased to attend alongside others committed to supporting stronger, more connected and prepared communities.

One of the strongest reflections from the day was that resilience is not only built during times of crisis, but through the everyday relationships, local connections and support networks that strengthen communities long before emergencies occur.

Great to see so many people and organisations coming together around this important kaupapa.

ANCAD continues to share resilience-related news, updates and community preparedness information through the Resilient Auckland North platform: resilientaucklandnorth.org.nz

Running a community group often means wearing many hats: governance, funding, planning, leadership, volunteers, reporting and more.

Many local organisations are doing incredible work while also navigating increasing pressures and limited capacity behind the scenes.

Thanks to funding support from the Kaipātiki Local Board, community groups and organisations in the Kaipātiki area can currently access free ANCAD consultancy support across areas such as governance, planning, funding readiness, leadership and organisational development.

Whether your group is just getting started or navigating change and growth, practical support is available.

Good leadership is often shaped through conversations not just instructions.

Whether in workplaces, community organisations or volunteer teams, many leaders are expected to support performance, navigate difficult conversations and help others grow, often without ever being taught practical coaching skills.

ANCAD’s upcoming LiiFT Learning session *Coaching for Performance: Build Confidence and Capability in Developing Your People* explores practical coaching approaches including active listening, constructive feedback, communication and supporting people to build confidence and capability.

As workplaces and community organisations continue navigating pressure, change and wellbeing challenges, the ability to coach and communicate effectively has never been more important.
