Mindful Threads: Community Textile Workshop

Join us at this beginner-friendly stitching session led by creatives Tineswari Maruthamuthu and Catherine Heald. In this relaxed workshop, we'll be making pieces for a community wall hanging from recycled and repurposed fabrics.

Our blood, sweat and tears have gone into growing these babies*, and now you get to take one home for free! What?!

Save the date for our native plant giveaway - Saturday 20 June, 10am-2pm. We'll have harakeke, karamū, kawakawa, kōwhai, mānuka, and wharangi to share, which have all been grown with love in our EcoMatters Nursery with the help of our wonderful weekly volunteers.

Our Nursery Manager Eve (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Māmoe, Waitaha) will be there to chat about how to care for your plant, and Rongoā practitioner Juanita De Senna (Te Aupouri, Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi, Waikato) will be sharing her knowledge on the medicinal uses of native plants. She'll even have kawakawa and kūmarahou lollipops to share.

Can't wait to see you there, let's all get planting and bring more birdsong and biodiversity into our backyards.

Just two years ago, this part of the streamside was blanketed by invasive weeds and dumped rubbish. Last month, we collaborated with WSAFC - Western Springs Association Football Club to plant 600 native seedlings right here. What a milestone.

Ngā mihi to the WSAFC athletes and families - thank you for bringing your enthusiasm and endurance! The plants you've put into the ground will enrich local biodiversity, provide food and shelter for native birds, stabilise stream banks, capture carbon, and make this a beautiful place for generations to enjoy.

Planting is a moment in time that's years in the making, so we want to acknowledge everyone who’s come to a rubbish clean up or weeding bee too! We’ll be revisiting this site over the next few years to ensure that these young plants have what they need to take root, grow healthily, and one day, scatter their own seeds as they mature.

Cheers to Auckland Council and Waitākere Ranges Local Board for supporting the restoration of this Waikūmete Stream tributary. And special thanks to Katie Rood and the WSAFC Girls Academy for helping to make this happen, and bringing their wider community along.

For many years now, she's done incredible mahi to heal the Whau river and its tributaries. She works with volunteers, corporate groups, schools and community groups to clean streams, get rid of invasive weeds, plant native plants and keep them nurtured throughout the years.

Last week, she was recognised as this year's recipient of the Whau Local Hero Portrait Project. Congratulations Pam!

In typical Pam fashion, she used the opportunity to acknowledge everyone else who works towards the restoration of nature in West Auckland, and to remind us all to advocate for our stronger protections for our local environment - particularly now as the Waitākere Ranges Heritage Area Act is under threat from proposed changes to the RMA. Thank you Pam for always holding the vision.

Bringing back Mel vs moth plant pods! There are just five days left to enter the Henderson-Massey Moth Plant Competition and win some seriously good prizes: ecomatters.org.nz/mothplantcomp

Top tip: Make sure you pull the vine out of the ground too so it doesn't keep growing. While the pods need to be removed and put in your rubbish bin, vines can be left to die where they are.
