And the Bupa NZ Healthy Cities Challenge winners are…

Grand prize: Lucy Ruck, who cycled the Te Whau Pathway and wins a $3000 Storm Rides e-scooter package, courtesy of NZ, Waitākere Ranges Local Board and Whau Local Board. Lucy was guiding a group ride and rigged up a map holder with a zip lock bag and rubber bands to keep everyone on track. Resourceful and fun!

Runner-up: Jingwen Shi takes home a $150 Bodega Café voucher, thanks to Bupa NZ. “My daughter enjoyed the bike ride so much! We loved the event!”

Judges’ choice for best story: Vyom Gowda and parent Vilas Shivakumar, for “My Little Bike Adventure,” a balance bike ride on the Whau Whānau Ride that included a passing train, lots of smiles and a hot chocolate with marshmallows. Enjoy your Bodega voucher, thanks to Bupa NZ.

Huge thanks to Bupa NZ, and the Waitākere Ranges and Whau local boards for making the Challenge possible, and to everyone who entered. Every adventure shared will plant a native tree in West Auckland.

You may have heard that our w**d composting bags are made in NZ for NZ conditions. But did you know that by "locally made", we actually meant made right here in New Lynn?

And in classic Kiwi style, the person who makes them also happens to be a team member's uncle.

We had a new batch on order, so we took a short stroll up the shared path to watch them getting stitched together. Thanks for the factory tour, Uncle Bill!

These come in two sizes and are great for composting soft w**ds, such as Tradescantia, Plectranthus, or African Clubmoss. Perfect if you don't want to use herbicides, don't have a trailer or simply would like to compost your w**ds on your own property or onsite at your restoration project. Available now on our website or from the EcoMatters Store.

Get the kids outside these school holidays! Join our Project Twin Streams stream rangers Pam and Alanah this Friday for a fun Treasure Hunt at Ōkaurirahi / Ceramco Park.

Explore the stream, discover local plants and wildlife, see what’s living in the water, learn why eels are so special and get stuck into some hands-on activities. We’ll finish with a well-earned cookie!

🌿💧 What a wonderful day at La Rosa Garden Reserve in Flood-Ready Treasure Hunt! 🔎🌱

Despite a little rain, our young explorers were full of enthusiasm, following clues, discovering nature and learning about our local stream, flora and fauna. 🐦💦

The best part? Everyone went home with happy smiles, a native plant sapling to nurture, and plenty of new knowledge about caring for our natural environment. 🌱💚

What a joy to gather as a team recently to celebrate our very own Amanda Hookham-Kraft, who was recognised with a Lifetime Contribution Award at the 2026 Tāmaki Makaurau Zero Waste Awards.

Amanda’s work in regenerative practice and zero waste extends far beyond her role at EcoMatters and with Compost Collective. She has helped schools establish composting and food growing programmes, which inspires young people to understand the connection between soil, water, plants and people.

She’s also been instrumental in getting zero waste, nature and garden projects underway at Titirangi Rudolf Steiner School and bringing so many other people along on this journey.

We were so delighted to welcome some of Amanda’s whānau and representatives from Titirangi Rudolf Steiner School to share in this celebration too.

The Lifetime Contribution Awards were a new addition to this year’s Zero Waste Awards, after the judges noted there were several names that came up time and time again for their lasting contribution to waste minimisation efforts. Congratulations Amanda!

"I'm quite a solitary person so I love the peace and quiet of being in the garden. Now that I've been working on Second Bite for a while, I've grown to love the smell of fresh food scraps and I love the smell that eventually comes from making quality compost as well. That's what I look forward to.

I love food. I'm passionate about food security and feeding people, and I just want to keep doing this for the rest of my life.

Food is such an essential human need, and it's just getting harder for everyday people to obtain at a reasonable price. I care a lot about the people who don't have enough food for their families and I feel for them when I see empty shelves at the pātaka kai.

I wouldn't call myself a gardening expert, but I love to share what I do know, and to help people to be more self-sufficient, especially when times get tough.

In times of crisis, when the shelves are left bare, that's when it's especially important for us all to have back up systems - the kai shelves, the community gardens and people growing their own organic food. That's something I'm really passionate about."

School holidays are nearly here and if you're looking for inspiration, our Flat White Ride map is a great place to start. It's brimming with ideas for local places to explore by bike, as Julia's whānau, pictured here, found out when they picked up their map at our launch event a few weeks ago.

Julia says: "We’ve had an awesome time up at Arataki and can’t wait to do some of the other flat white bike trails! Love the initiative and motivation, thank you!"

We're having a native plant sale! Come on Sunday and pick some up. They've been lovingly grown from eco-sourced seed, and are ready to go into the ground. Many are well suited to stream and wetland restoration projects.
