Cultural Exchange & Experience Journey of Young Kiwis in China from Shanghai to Beijing
Introduction:
CNSST Jay Acton Kiwi-Dragon Cultural Exchange Scholarship (hereafter: KD Scholarship) was initiated and is administered by CNSST Foundation.
The purpose of the Scholarship is to provide financial support to the local young Kiwis with financial difficulty a meaningful Chinese cultural experience trip. The aim of the Kiwi-Dragon Scholarship is to provide an opportunity for local New Zealand students to gain an understanding of or enrich their knowledge of Chinese culture so as to bring positive impact to the development of their social and cultural values in their life journey.
The scholarship is funded by CNSST through its organized fundraising events. The CNSST Foundation wishes to express its sincere appreciation and gratitude to all sponsors who support our scholarship. Without the generous support and contribution from our sponsors, the realization of this endeavor would not be possible.
Snapshot for Chinese Cultural Trip:
On 14th April 2024, CNSST Foundation led 14 local youth students from diverse background ( Pakeha, Maori, Pasifika, Indian and Egyptian), the CNSST Jay Acton Kiwi-Dragon Cultural Exchange Scholarship recipients, from New Zealand on a cultural exploration journey in China. This ten-day journey not only provided the young kiwis with the opportunity to experience Chinese culture firsthand but also offered a valuable experience to deeply understand Chinese civilization. This article will guide you through their journey, spanning from the vibrant city of Shanghai to the culturally rich Beijing. It will illustrate how New Zealand teenagers deeply engaged with Chinese culture through educational activities and cultural exchanges in various cities. Additionally, it will delve into the emotions and educational insights they gained along the way.
Shanghai: Fusion of Modernity and Tradition
Introduction to the "Magic City"
On April 15, 2024, the young New Zealanders landed in Shanghai, kicking off their adventure with a visit to the Shanghai Natural History Museum. This stop not only unveiled the city's abundant natural history but also showcased its status as a global metropolis. The young Kiwis were captivated by the diverse flora and fauna specimens on display, immersing themselves in a rich learning experience, especially for those who had a passion for Chinese from an early age.
Immersion in Shanghai's Pace
Over the next two days, our young kiwis strolled through the hustle and bustle of Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, took boat tours to admire the spectacular views of the Bund, which not only allowed them to experience Shanghai's modernity but also feel the city's profound historical and cultural heritage. In the evening, while enjoying delicious food at the orbiting restaurant of the Oriental Pearl Tower, they were also amazed by the night view outside the window, experiencing the charm of Shanghai.
Exploration of Ancient Towns and Gardens
Exploring Zhujiajiao Ancient Town and Yu Garden provided our young New Zealanders with a glimpse of tranquility and classical elegance contrasting with the vibrant city life. In Zhujiajiao, the ancient town appeared even more serene in the gentle drizzle, captivating the students as they listened intently to the guide's narratives about the town's rich history and culture. Meanwhile, at Yu Garden, they not only marveled at the intricacies of Jiangnan gardens but also savored authentic Shanghai snacks, enhancing their appreciation and connection to traditional Chinese culture.
Experiencing “Chinese Speed”
Our young Kiwis embarked on a high-speed rail journey from Shanghai to Beijing, covering a total distance of 1,207 kilometers in just four and a half hours, with speeds exceeding 300 kilometers per hour. They were so excited throughout the journey.
This remarkable experience not only showcased the prowess of Chinese technology but also fostered a profound appreciation for China's modernization, sparking their curiosity and admiration for the country's remarkable development.
Beijing: A Profound Historical Legacy
Experiencing the Root of the Imperial City
Our young Kiwis' journey continued northward, with the high-speed rail whisking them to China's capital, Beijing. Upon arrival, their first destination was the Summer Palace. Renowned as one of China's most well-preserved imperial gardens, it boasts exquisite landscapes and a rich historical tapestry. As they wandered through the sprawling corridors, the children were entranced by the vivid paintings adorning the walls, each one a window into ancient tales and classical Chinese artistry. With the guide's expert narration, they learned about the palace's construction and its embodiment of ancient Chinese royal philosophies, fostering a profound respect and fascination for this historic landmark.
Experiencing Traditional Arts
In the days that followed, the Beijing itinerary provided our young kiwis with opportunities to immerse themselves further in Chinese culture. Through calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting classes, they not only mastered the techniques of brush and ink but also grasped the profound significance of these art forms in conveying Chinese culture. The martial arts experience class offered a firsthand glimpse into the power and elegance of Chinese martial arts, leaving the children with a lasting impression and a deeper understanding of this rich cultural tradition.
Visiting Historical and Cultural Sites
A trip to the Forbidden City was undoubtedly a highlight of their journey. Serving as the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it not only stands as the largest palace complex globally but also serves as an iconic symbol of Chinese culture. As they strolled through the grandeur of the Hall of Supreme Harmony and crossed the Golden Water Bridge, the children felt transported through time, immersing themselves in the magnificence once reserved for emperors. Following their exploration of Tiananmen Square, they ventured into the ancient Beijing hutongs, gaining insight into the daily lives of local residents through interactive experiences like dumpling-making sessions.
Moreover, the children had the opportunity to visit the Imperial College and Shichahai, where they delved into China's ancient education system and marveled at the breathtaking scenery of Beijing's lakes and mountains. At Beihai Park, they savored the serenity and beauty of Chinese classical gardens, embracing the philosophy of living in harmony with nature.
Climbing the Great Wall, the eighth wonder of the world
Embark on a remarkable adventure as young kiwis explore the majestic Great Wall, an architectural marvel and the eighth wonder of the world. Traversing its ancient pathways, our young kiwis uncover centuries of history and marvel at the breathtaking vistas stretching across the Chinese landscape. With each step, they immersed themselves in the rich tapestry of Chinese culture and heritage, gaining insights into the ingenuity and resilience of the builders who crafted this monumental structure. From the towering watchtowers to the rugged terrain, every moment spent on the Great Wall is an unforgettable journey of discovery and wonder.
Conclusion: Bridge of Chinese Culture
Through this journey, CNSST Jay Acton Kiwi-Dragon Cultural Exchange Scholarship students not only traversed China geographically from south to north but also experienced a leap from ancient to modern culture. Each stop was not only a cognitive experience of Chinese culture but also a touching and growing experience for their hearts. The contrast between the ancient landmarks and modern facades of Beijing, along with the juxtaposition with the modern vitality of Shanghai, gave the children a comprehensive perception of China.
Such profound cultural experiences have immeasurable value in promoting understanding and friendship between young people from China and New Zealand. The knowledge they gained and the emotional experiences they had will remain forever in their memories, continuing to influence their worldview and outlook on life in the future. Such cultural exchanges not only enhance children's understanding and interest in Chinese culture but also establish bridges for cross-cultural communication, laying a solid foundation for friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
