Big thanks to Gail Romano: Curator War History Auckland War Memorial Museum who told of two NZ Donald Brown's (from Otago and Auckland) who both found themselves on the Somme on the morning of 15th Sept 1916. What a pleasure it was to listen to Guest Speaker Ben Eder, freshly minted Manager at Te Papapa Sports Club. In a short 5-months with support from wonderful local volunteers, Ben has had the facility in Fergusson Domain, Oranga, repainted and reinvigorated. The story he has to tell can be found in our Weekly Bulliten here:https://www.rotarymaungakiekie.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Bulletin-Newsletter-NL-237-20th-October-2025.pdf . One of our October Guest Speakers was Troy Elliot, Executive Director of Think and Be Me (TABM) who is working with Founder and club member, Cat Levine who developed the child wellbeing programme. A Rotary Foundation Global Grant provided funding for a 3-year Te Tai Tokerau Tamariki (Northland) mental wellbeing project. To date, Cat and her team delivered to 38 Northland schools, training 335 teachers, impacting 6,700 students. The program received high praise from school principals, with reports of reduced bullying and improved emotional responses among students. Troy is in the process of securing operational funding to ensure the ongoing roll out to other regions. Several hundred of the community gathered this morning at Epsom’s ANZAC Day Service, held at Marivare Reserve. The weather was fair, and the atmosphere was one of quiet respect and remembrance.

The service was led by Rotary Maungakiekie Co-Presidents Barry Stafford, Craig Jones, and Bill Grayson. Attendees were moved by a poem read by Mavis, Catherine, and Sue-Ellen Fenelon, followed by a stirring rendition of Abide with Me performed by the St Andrew's Choir and Organist.

The Reverend Jeremy Wood offered a heartfelt reflection on those who gave their lives in service many years ago. Members of the public were invited to lay wreaths, followed by the solemn Roll of Honour and the Ode of Remembrance.

The Last Post was performed by Hamish Butterworth-Snell, and the Colours were placed and retrieved by the Epsom District Girl Guides and St George’s Scout Group.

Sincere thanks go to the Albert-Eden Local Board, Edwards Sound, Tim Woolfield, Rotary members, and organiser Peter Mayow for helping make this important commemoration possible.
