Adrien Top has created this awesome bike vs. car cost calculator for New Zealand, to help people decarbonise their transport. Giving current world events we think this a super helpful tool! Adrien has said elsewhere on facebook that he will try and build in a way to show how quickly you would be able to earn back an investment in an electric bike as well, which most people probably over estimate.

Find out how much you save cycling instead of driving. Based on real NZ fuel prices, IRD mileage rates, and your actual commute distance.

Kia ora koutou!
Tomorrow - Tuesday 3 Mar - is our first CAW catch-up of the year - come on down to Old Surfdale Post Office at 6pm! Bring your bike, as we'll kick off the meeting with a group ride along the Esplanade and back, before we settle into our meeting.

We'll have a rep from the local board here to talk about infrastructure. Let's talk events and bikes, too! And bring people who would like to join, too!

Bikes + people = fun!

Awesome morning last Sunday at the Onetangi Sports Park for the Mountains Bike Sampler under the guidance of Fionn Lawley and Amelia Lawley from the Waiheke Mountain Bike Club. Thanks to Felix from Bike Hub Waiheke for his mechanical support. Thank you all for coming out and what fun is the Family Track. Kudos to those that made it up the hills and the rest of the Onetangi Sports Park trails. Beautiful sunny morning well spent getting some skills down to have fun on those sweet trails and build cycling confidence.

Introducing your Bike Pecha Kucha presenters
Waiheke Resources Trust, 7pm Thursday 16 October

Ben King shares exploring the hidden valleys and mountains of the Republic of Georgia by bike, from snowy mountains to blistering desserts with lots of adventures in between.

DaBaker condenses a month-long bikepacking trip through the Southern Alps of NZ into an exacting presentation all about adventure, tackling tracks like The Old Ghost Road. freedom camping, and discovering our remote wilderness.

In 2024, Daniel McCormick cycled the South Island’s iconic Molesworth and Rainbow gravel roads in May, just as winter arrived. Daniel will talk about how he got there from Waiheke with his bike, share some thoughts on route planning, accommodation options and the ups and downs of winter cycling.

Andy Gibbard loves to ride. As a kid he rode his bike to school everyday, and used his bike to get everywhere. He still loves to ride both for the love of riding in a special place, and as a way to commute to work. He is also lucky enough in his role to build the cycling infrastructure that enables more people to get out on their bikes. His grandfather Duncan as an Engineer was a strong advocate for cycleways in NZ, building some of the first in the country!

Fresh (or rather dripping in sweat) back from a three-week cycling odyssey around Japan’s Seto Inland Sea with Francisco Blaha, going beyond Shimanami Kaido and never missing an opportunity to roll onto a ferry, Vibeke Brethouwer will report back on being an inexperienced bike tourer in Japan last month.

Orna McGinn will be presenting on her cycle trip from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, via potholes, temples, protesting monks and pesky s*x tourists. An unforgettable experience!

See you tomorrow at the Sustainability Centre! Let us know on humanitix that you're coming ; )

This morning we rode to raise money for paracycling team Gaza Sunbirds as part of their globally-held event The Great Ride of Return. They raise funds for desperately needed supplies in Gaza, as well as to support their mission to cycle in the 2028 paralympics as a Palestinian team.

You can choose to donate for aid or cycling by going to www.gazasunbirds.org/campaigns/great-ride

Read more about their history and what they’ve achieved on their website!

This Sunday, we cycle from Matiatia to Onetangi to continue to raise awareness of Palestine. The Great Ride of Return is a global, non-violent, family-friendly grassroots movement uniting communities across more than 95 cities and 35 countries demanding justice, equality and an end to the occupation. We will be part of this movement, from Oneroa to Onetangi!

Here is information about the Gaza Sunbirds, organisers of this global ride and Palestine's first and only paracycling team, from their fundraising page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/gaza-sunbirds-intl-sports

We are the Gaza Sunbirds—Palestine’s first and only paracycling team, born in Gaza and racing the world. After a historic return to the 2025 UCI Para-Cycling World Cup, we are now heading toward the UCI Para-Cycling World Championships. With your support, Palestine’s flag will be raised high on the world stage.

Team Palestine’s story began under the rubble of war. Gaza has endured five major Israeli assaults since 2008 and a brutal blockade since 2007. The Gaza Sunbirds are made up of many of Palestine’s strongest paracyclists. Our co-founder, Alaa al-Dali, and longtime teammate, Mohammed Abu Asfour, compete internationally as Team Palestine. They fly our flag not only to win, but to bring awareness and support to every teammate still unable to ride, living under siege.

Gaza has one of the highest rates of conflict-related amputations in the world—and the highest rate of child amputees globally. Many of our teammates are among them. We are athletes who have turned our injuries into a source of strength.

When Alaa al-Dali lost his leg to an Israeli sniper while peacefully protesting in 2018, he chose resistance through resilience. He transformed his dream of international competition into a shared mission: building a paracycling team of survivors. That mission became the Gaza Sunbirds: over 20 athletes using sport to reclaim our stories and inspire others through strength, movement, and solidarity.

This past year, Alaa made history as the first Palestinian ever to compete in the UCI Road & Para-Cycling World Championships, after being evacuated from Gaza to Europe. Alaa and Asfour now train in Belgium and in the countries where they compete.

Our next goal: To compete in the 2025 UCI Para-Cycling World Championships and continue racing toward qualifying for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

To get there, Team Palestine needs your help. We’re raising £20,000 / $25,000 / €23,500 (or the equivalent in your currency) to support:

Essential training costs

- Accessible transportation to and from training sites and races

- Accommodations during competitions

- Updated cycling equipment

- Participation in the 2025 UCI World Championships

Investing in future training opportunities for athletes in Gaza and beyond

Every contribution—whether pounds, dollars, or euros, helps us pedal forward. We race for every amputee who dreams of more. For a future where Gaza is known not for its suffering, but for its strength.

Support the Sunbirds and help us fly.

Amos Trust is our UK fundraising partner and supports us in safely transferring funds internationally.
