What happens when you take public speaking out of the meeting room and add good food, great company and a few unexpected questions? 😄

You get a night like the one we had at Ida Bar!

There were lots of laughs, plenty of surprises and, without really noticing it, we were practising some incredibly useful communication skills.

Thinking on the spot.
Finding a way to express an idea clearly.
Speaking about topics we wouldn’t normally choose.
Listening to others and keeping a conversation going.

That’s the beauty of practising communication through games. You’re learning while you’re having fun.

And the more you practise, the more you realise you don’t need to have the “perfect” answer. You learn to trust yourself, find your words and simply give it a go.

That confidence can follow you everywhere — into a work meeting, an interview, a presentation, a social event or an unexpected conversation.

Wednesday night was a wonderful reminder that becoming a better communicator can actually be a lot of fun.

You don’t need to dream of becoming a professional speaker to benefit from Toastmasters.

Maybe you want to feel more confident contributing during a work meeting.

Maybe English is your second language and you’d like more opportunities to express yourself.

Maybe you need to present a university project, talk to clients, attend networking events or simply feel more comfortable speaking in a group.

Our fabulous night at Ida Bar showed how something as simple as games, conversation and spontaneous speaking can help us practise all of those skills.

Communication is something we use every single day — and like any skill, it becomes easier with practice.

The wonderful part? You don’t have to wait until you feel confident before you begin.

You develop that confidence by participating, experimenting, laughing at yourself occasionally, learning from others and having another go.

Have you ever been in a conversation and suddenly thought…
“I have absolutely no idea what to say next.” 😳

This is one of the skills we had great fun practising at our Toastmasters evening at Ida Bar.

Someone gives you a topic. You don’t know what’s coming. You have only a few seconds to think… and then you speak.
It might sound challenging at first, but something interesting happens when you practise it regularly: you become better at thinking on your feet.

You learn to organise an idea quickly, talk about subjects you wouldn’t normally choose and keep a conversation flowing.
And that skill goes far beyond public speaking.
It can help in meetings, networking, job interviews, social situations — or simply when someone asks you a question you weren’t expecting.

That’s one of the things we love about Toastmasters. We practise real communication skills in a friendly environment, one conversation at a time.

What if speaking about something you know very little about could actually become… fun?

Wednesday night at Ida Bar reminded us exactly why practising communication through games can be so powerful.
There were unexpected questions, unusual subjects, laughter, hesitation, quick thinking — and plenty of moments where people surprised themselves with what they could come up with!
The more we practise speaking in a friendly and supportive environment, the less intimidating those unexpected moments become.

You start trusting yourself.

You become more comfortable expressing an idea even when you haven’t had time to prepare.

And eventually, instead of thinking, “Oh no, I have to speak…” you may find yourself thinking, “Okay… let’s see what I can do with this!”

That change in confidence is exactly what Toastmasters is about.

What a fabulous night we had at Ida Bar! 🎉

Good food, great company, plenty of laughter… and a whole lot of talking!

Our Toastmasters Taster Night was a chance to do something a little different and bring communication practice out into the community.

Through games, spontaneous questions and lots of unexpected topics, we discovered just how much we can learn while having fun.

Because improving your communication doesn’t always have to feel serious. Sometimes, the best practice happens when you’re laughing, thinking on your feet and wondering, “How on earth am I going to answer that?” 😄

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening such a success.

And if you missed it, you can still come and experience Central Otago Toastmasters at one of our regular meetings in Alexandra. Guests are always welcome.

☀️ Need a little midweek fun to brighten up the end of winter?

Tomorrow night, Wednesday 19 August at 6.30pm, we’re taking Toastmasters out of the meeting room and into Ida Bar, Alexandra for a fun and very casual evening.

Think food platters, a drink, a good yarn, lots of laughs and some light-hearted Toastmasters-style games designed to get everyone talking, thinking on their feet and enjoying themselves.

No need to know anything about Toastmasters. Come with a friend, come on your own, or come because it’s winter in Central Otago and getting out for a laugh sounds like a pretty good idea! 😄

The days are getting longer, the sun is coming back… so let’s give winter a proper send-off together. ☀️🥂
