We were asked if we could find a bike for a young chap who only wanted a red bike.

Easy fix…….this wee Avanti Lightning had had some time spent on it by our veloteers Martin & Nicola, including being lovingly serviced and parts replaced….well done team.

There’ll be a very happy young person tonight.

We have heaps of kids & adults bikes up-cycled by our veloteers and ready to roll.

Reach out if you need some wheels……a koha is appreciated if you have the means, but we often donate bikes to those who may be on a tight budget.

A nice problem to have!

We had a Bike Fixation Winter Wheel Out event at The BikeHive today as we need to shift some of our up-cycled bikes to create space.

We only sold one bike, and fixed up a few more…..so the nice problem is growing 😂. However this was a great test of the Wheel Out initiative.

However, a couple of groms (Flynn & Toby) scored some parts for their project bike, Chelsea scored a new rig set up for commuting, Jill brought us a couple of bikes to be up-cycled, Carida came for advice on a broken bike, James & Nic did an epic job with a first go at wrapping road bike handlebar tape…..and there was so much more buzz and bike chatter.

Veloteers today:
Nicola, Martin, Baz, Gavin, Jonny, Nic, James, Dave, Malakai, and Chelsea.

From my perspective, this is just so much fun but also the time the veloteers put in, is incredibly generous.

We are thrilled to be a finalist again (3rd year), in the Recreation Aotearoa - Te Whai Oranga Outdoors Awards 2026.

Across the motu, there are some incredible programmes who have also reached the finals. Check out the attached link.

For us this is not about winning an award, but more importantly it’s recognition for our COBA - Community Of Bike Ambassadors whom we have been developing in our region.

A wide demographical reach from rangatahi in our schools programme, through to the Cycling Without Age - Central Otago initiative. All aimed at building a positive cycling culture, helping others to enjoy cycling more often, and adding an extra layer of safety on our trails.

A big shout out to all of our COBA volunteers, and our sponsors who have got behind us, and enabled us to make a difference in our community. THANK YOU.

At the Up-Cycles Charitable Trust we are thrilled to have joined the Southern Lakes Trails Partner Programme.

This is particularly exciting for our flagship volunteer COBA - Community Of Bike Ambassadors programme, which we have been developing in our schools and wider community over the past 3 years.

60 adults and 100 rangatahi have completed the programme so far, and this means that we have a volunteer resource riding our trails, which in turn adds an extra layer of safety.

Another Bike Fixation event sorted today, this time in association with Central Otago REAP Repair & Care Cafe in Alexandra.

9 bikes assessed with 5 fixed, several AA sponsored bike lights gifted, heaps of bike chat and plenty advice given.

Several of our veloteers popped in to help or just talk bike….great to see you Nic, James, Dave, Malakai, Chelsea, Nicola and Martin.

Another awesome and fun day!
