Ilya Vierhout: 1998-2026

We are deeply saddened to learn of the fatal traffic accident of Ilya Vierhout, a talented filmmaker and actor and a valued member of our film community in Rotterdam.

His film De Albatros premiered at IFFR 2026, was shown at Zuidelijk Film Festival and will be screened at Raindance Film Festival in London.

Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time.

Education: call for films 📣 🍭

The IFFR Education department is continuously looking for suitable films for young audiences!

The films included in IFFR’s educational programme are used to introduce film as an art form, to inspire creativity, and to spark conversations about social issues.

IFFR serves a wide range of age groups from 0 to 26 years, including the Babyfilmclub (ages 0-3), primary education (4-12), secondary education (12-18), and vocational education (mbo) (16-26). Each programme is carefully tailored to its specific audience and matches the interests and experiences of that age group.

Do you think your film fits within our education programme? Submit your film via: https://iffr.com/en/education/education-call-for-films

Jury Prize in Cannes for Hubert Bals Fund- and IFFR Pro-supported Elephants in the Fog 🇳🇵🏆

Our congratulations to Nepalese filmmaker Abinash Bikram Shah, whose HBF-supported debut feature Elephants in the Fog won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.

"A work of shattering visual beauty and q***r political ferocity," wrote Cédric Succivalli for the International Cinephile Society on the film set in Nepal's transgender community.

The film was backed by the Hubert Bals Fund with Development Support (2021) and HBF+Europe: Minority Co-production Support (2023), as well as through IFFR Pro and the Netherlands Film Festival's BoostNL development programme (2022–3).

Co-producer Tatiana Leite of Bubbles Project (Brazil) – a Rotterdam Lab 2015 alum and familiar face as a CineMart mentor – brings yet another IFFR connection.
