Routebeschrijving Website

Roots & Routes International ROOTS & ROUTES is an international network for the promotion of cultural and social diversity in con V.

Since 2001, ROOTS & ROUTES has developed from a local project in Rotterdam/Netherlands to a big European network, recently starting collaborations with cultural organisations on other continents. In 2001, Rotterdam/Netherlands was the European Capital of Culture. In that context, ROOTS & ROUTES was founded as an initiative to give young artists from diverse backgrounds the chance to actively get involved in the Culture Capital activities. Three years later the first international ROOTS & ROUTES edition was organized as part of the Dutch presidency of the European Union: Young artists from 7 European countries jointly performed at the big opening event โ€œEuropa op de Dam โ€“ Thinking Forwardโ€ on July 4th, 2004. The shared goals and objectives of the participating organisations proved fruitful and led to many more transnational projects and involvement of new partners. In 2008, the collaboration was formalised with the establishment of the ROOTS & ROUTES International Association (RRIA). The international network has since implemented 12 multiannual transnational projects funded by programmes such as ERASMUS+, Culture, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Leonardo da Vinci and Grundtvig. ๐ŸŽฌ Testing Zone in Picardy: putting peer coaching into practice

In the small village of Caumartin, artists spent one week creating, experimenting, and learning together as part of the first Testing Zone of the ๐‘๐‘๐๐‚๐€ ๐Ÿ.๐ŸŽ.

Guided by coaches, the group explored what it means to collaborate in a real creative setting โ€” turning ideas, memories, and personal stories into short films and music.

Their work focused on themes such as ๐ก๐จ๐ฆ๐ž, ๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ก๐จ๐จ๐, and the things we feel ready to share.

More than a creative residency, the Testing Zone was a space to test skills, exchange perspectives, and grow through direct experience.

peer coaching and artistic youth work: how can we create safer, more welcoming, and more accessible spaces for young people?

Through workshops, reflection exercises, action learning, and peer-led activities, participants explored topics such as identity, discrimination, mental health, climate anxiety, self-care, and healthy boundaries.

It was a week of deep conversations, shared tools, and collective learning โ€” strengthening the role of peer coaches as facilitators of inclusive creative processes.

Looking ahead together: โšก๏ธ

From May 24โ€“27, artists, youth workers, project coordinators, and cultural practitioners from across Europe gathered in Florence for an international seminar coordinated by and hosted by at .

Over four days, participants exchanged practices, shared experiences from their local contexts, and explored emerging challenges and opportunities in artistic youth work. Through discussions, workshops, and collaborative brainstorming, we developed new project ideas and explored innovative approaches to supporting young people through arts, creativity, and participation.

From community building and youth leadership to mental health, AI and artistic methodologies, the seminar generated a wealth of ideas that will inspire future collaborations and initiatives across Europe.

Beyond the working sessions, the seminar provided a valuable opportunity to connect, exchange perspectives, and strengthen international cooperation among network organisations active in artistic youth work. The conversations started in Florence will continue โ€” and we are excited to see where they lead next!

ACTion! participants presented each otherโ€™s local realities through tabloids from their home countries, that are often indicators of the kinds of distractions the media machine utilises and the tensions they inflame.

This can reveal a lot about their local political realities.

They then spent time redacting these tabloids to make blackout poetry. After this, the participants used Kurt Vonnegut Jr's dystopian short story of equality ('Harrison Bergeron') as inspiration for their own text on a world of equality they would like to see using automatic writing. Through a performance score, they diluted the text to a single word that was used as the material for their visual poems.
