Introductory Meeting with Hon. Glenn Bedingfield.

The Malta Police Union recently held an introductory meeting with the Hon. Glenn Bedingfield.

During the meeting, a number of matters of importance to police officers were discussed, including the implementation of a health insurance scheme, further improvements to the protection of pensions for long-serving officers, as well as the possibility of staggering the current percentage increase in pensions.

The Malta Police Union remains committed to safeguarding the rights, wellbeing and interests of its members and looks forward to continued discussions and collaboration on these important issues.

Today, we bid farewell to Fr. Raymond as he celebrates his final Mass as Police Chaplain, marking the end of an incredible 34-year journey of dedicated service to the Malta Police Force.

For police officers and their families, Fr. Ray was much more than a Chaplain. He was a friend, a trusted confidant, a source of comfort and strength, and someone who was always there when he was needed most.

Throughout the years, his compassion, dedication and genuine care touched the lives of countless members of the Force and their families.

Thank you, Fr. Ray, for 34 years of devoted service, dedication, compassion and friendship. 🙏

Yesterday’s tragic incident, in which two police officers were injured after being shot while carrying out their duty, one critically, once again highlighted the serious risks faced by members of the Police Force every day.

The introduction of 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒄𝒆 has long been a proposal advocated by the Union and was also included as a commitment in the newly elected Government’s electoral manifesto.

Following yesterday’s incident, this commitment has taken on even greater importance. We look forward to engaging with the Government and the responsible Minister to ensure that this important measure is progressed and implemented as soon as reasonably possible.

Our thoughts remain with our injured colleagues and their families. We wish them strength and a full recovery.

The Malta Police Union is deeply humbled by the overwhelming support and solidarity shown towards our colleagues following today’s tragic events. We are equally grateful to everyone who immediately responded to the appeal to donate blood, demonstrating once again the compassion and unity of our community.

We also wish to inform the public that further assistance will be required in the coming days, and we kindly encourage continued support as needed.

The Malta Police Union also wishes to express its sincere appreciation to all police officers and emergency responders who attended the scene. Despite the extremely difficult and distressing circumstances they encountered, they continued to carry out their duties with the utmost professionalism, courage and composure, ensuring the safety of the public while supporting their injured colleagues.

Their dedication and commitment are a credit to the Malta Police Force.

At the same time, the Malta Police Union strongly urges everyone to refrain from speculation regarding the ongoing case and to avoid linking this incident to political discussions or agendas.

Out of respect for those involved, their families, and the ongoing investigations, we appeal for restraint, responsibility and unity during this difficult time.

Blood Donation Van at Police General Headquarters

Following discussions between the Malta Police Union and the Police Administration, arrangements have been made for the National Blood Transfusion Service Blood Donation Van to be stationed in front of the Police General Headquarters on Saturday, 25 July 2026, between 08:30 and 13:00.

The Malta Police Union encourages all police officers, public officers, and members of the public who are eligible to donate blood to make use of this opportunity. This initiative is open to everyone, and your donation can make a real difference.

The Malta Police Union extends its sincere thanks to Director General Stefania Sgandurra and Commissioner of Police Angelo Gafà for their immediate support and cooperation in making these arrangements possible.

Statement by the Malta Police Union

The Malta Police Union urgently appeals to all eligible persons to donate blood in support of our colleagues who were seriously injured in the line of duty during today’s operation in San Ġwann.

There is an especially urgent need for O negative (O−) blood donors; however, donations of all blood groups are greatly appreciated and may help save lives.

Blood donations can be made at the National Blood Transfusion Centre, St Luke’s Square, G’Mangia.

We thank the public for their solidarity and support during this difficult time.

Statement by the Malta Police Union

The Malta Police Union is closely monitoring the ongoing situation in San Ġwann and urges members of the public to fully cooperate with the Police and all emergency services currently responding to the incident.

We appeal to everyone to remain calm, avoid unnecessary speculation, and refrain from sharing unverified information, so that the authorities can carry out their duties safely and effectively.

We express our full support and solidarity with the injured police officer, as well as with all officers and emergency personnel involved in this situation.

We extend our sincere wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the injured officer and assure all those affected of the Union’s continued support during this challenging time.
