June | Women for Women 2026 Calendar

This month, we celebrate two women whose work ensures that the most vulnerable voices in Malta are not just heard, but acted upon.

Umayma Elamin Amer moved to Malta from Sudan via Libya in search of better opportunities for her children, and turned that lived experience into a mission. As founder and president of the Migrant Women Association Malta (MWAM), she's spent a decade building language classes, empowerment workshops, and support services that help migrant and refugee women find their footing and their voice. Her advocacy now reaches European level, with her serving on the WAVE Network Advisory Board and the European Commission's Expert Group on Migration.

Sarah Carabott has spent over a decade as a journalist at Times of Malta, using her platform to tell the human stories behind the headlines - migration, racism, gender-based violence, social justice. Her award-winning reporting on domestic violence and survivors of r**e has shone a light where it's needed most. Beyond the newsroom, she's an active voice against racism and for migrants' rights, helping shape national dialogue through Malta's Anti-Racism Platform.

Two women. Two very different paths. One shared belief - that every woman, no matter where she comes from, deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.

We are honoured to feature them in our 2026 calendar 🌸

Kopin Malta is a proud partner of a new CERV-funded project led by our friends at Amref Health Africa.

Y-Turnout EU is first and foremost a participatory democracy initiative designed to address the growing political disengagement and gender gap among young Europeans, as reflected in attitudes and voting behaviour in the 2024 EU elections.

By focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), a key policy area intersecting gender equality, healthcare access, and social justice to address a human right and fundamental pillar of women’s rights, the project empowers diverse youth, including marginalized communities, to actively shape EU, national and local policies.

This Wednesday and Friday, we kick-start this new adventure with a two-day virtual workshop focusing on EU SRHR Advocacy.

At JRS Malta, we believe that effective service starts with a deep understanding of those we serve. Alongside our partners aditus and Migrant Women Association Malta, we are currently conducting a comprehensive mapping exercise to identify the needs and support systems of vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees in Malta. This will help us tailor our services better in an evidence-based manner.

This vital mapping exercise is made possible by the Rapid Response Fund of the Swiss Confederation. As part of this exercise, on 24 of February we conducted a focus group with leaders of different refugee communities. Following this meeting, we shared an Iftar meal and discussed other ways in which we can collaborate more closely to support communities and amplify their voices.

This project is supported by the Swiss contribution to reduce social and economic disparities in the EU.

On International Women's Day 2026, MWAM stands in solidarity with migrant and refugee women worldwide and recognizes the strength and contributions of refugees and migrant women in Malta.

As conflicts and crises persist globally, many women are forced to flee their homes in search of safety.

Despite the challenges of displacement, migrant and refugee women continue to rebuild their lives and contribute to their host communities.

Today, we celebrate their resilience and advocate for greater protection, dignity, and equal opportunities for all migrant and refugee women.

On 27 February, UNHCR Malta had a very enriching meeting with the Migrant Women Association Malta (MWAM). During our discussion, both organisations exchanged updates on priorities, ongoing work, and emerging developments. For UNHCR, it was essential to listen to MWAM’s field‑level insights, particularly the practical challenges migrant and refugee women face and the community‑based solutions that continue to emerge from their experiences.

We were pleased to learn about MWAM’s ongoing projects and activities, which underline the vital role of grassroots organisations in strengthening inclusion and supporting women through difficult times.

UNHCR looks forward to continuing this constructive collaboration throughout 2026!
