Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network We are committed to achieving better health for the people in the Eastern Mediterranean Region

In 2009, the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET) was established to be an umbrella organization for field epidemiology training programs (FETPs) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) with the purpose of connecting and supporting the region’s FETPs whose epidemiological capacities prove essential, especially in the context of the EMR’s complex public health profile. Starting in 2009 as a regional network for Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) in the EMR, EMPHNET expanded its work in 2012 to incorporate new areas of work such as rapid response, polio eradication, outreach emergency, and other areas. Such expansion stemmed from requests received from countries as well as challenges detected by EMPHNET and its partners. In 2015, EMPHNET launched the Global Health Development (GHD) initiative to meet the growing needs and requests coming from EMR countries as a means for leveraging health outcomes.

The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) has kicked off a new cohort of the Basic Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) with its first workshop, under the Sudan Health Emergency Infrastructure Project (SHEIP).

This program, implemented by the FMoH and supported by the African Development Bank through the WHO, with technical support from EMPHNET, aims to strengthen frontline capacity for disease surveillance and outbreak response by equipping health workers with practical, field-based epidemiology skills.

Through this collaboration, partners are investing in the people working at the frontlines of Sudan’s health system, strengthening the capacity needed to detect and respond to public health threats and protect communities.

أطلقت وزارة الصحة الاتحادية في السودان دفعة جديدة من المستوى الأساسي لبرنامج تدريب الوبائيات الميدانية، من خلال عقد ورشة العمل الأولى ضمن مشروع البنية التحتية للطوارئ الصحية في السودان.

ويأتي هذا البرنامج ثمرة شراكة بين وزارة الصحة الاتحادية وبنك التنمية الأفريقي، بدعم من منظمة الصحة العالمية، وإسناد فني من امفنت. ويهدف إلى تعزيز قدرات العاملين في الخطوط الأمامية في مجالي رصد الأمراض والاستجابة للفاشيات، من خلال تزويد الكوادر الصحية بمهارات عملية وتطبيقية في علم الأوبئة.

ومن خلال هذا التعاون، يستثمر الشركاء في الكوادر العاملة في الخطوط الأمامية للنظام الصحي في السودان، بما يسهم في تعزيز القدرات اللازمة للكشف عن تهديدات الصحة العامة والاستجابة لها، وحماية المجتمعات.

As part of its efforts to support countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) in adopting and institutionalizing the 7-1-7 approach, and in collaboration with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH), EMPHNET conducted a three-day National Training of Trainers on the 7-1-7 Target and Early Action Reviews (EAR) from September 12-14, 2026 in Amman, Jordan.

The workshop brought together technical personnel from the Palestinian Ministry of Health to strengthen their knowledge, practical skills, and readiness to adopt and institutionalize the 7-1-7 approach. This approach provides a framework for strengthening outbreak detection, notification, and response by aiming to detect a suspected outbreak within seven days, notify public health authorities within one day, and initiate early response actions within seven days.

ضمن جهودها لدعم بلدان إقليم شرق المتوسط في تبنّي نهج 7-1-7 وإدماجه في أنظمتها الصحية، عقدت امفنت، بالتعاون مع وزارة الصحة الفلسطينية، تدريبا وطنيا للمدربين حول نهج 7-1-7 ومراجعات الإجراءات المبكرة (EAR). واستمر التدريب ثلاثة أيام، من 12 إلى 14 سبتمبر 2026، في مقر امفنت في عمّان، الأردن.

جمع التدريب كوادر فنية من وزارة الصحة الفلسطينية بهدف تعزيز معارفهم ومهاراتهم العملية، والاستعداد لتطبيق نهج 7-1-7 وإدماجه ضمن آليات العمل المعتمدة. ويضع هذا النهج إطارا زمنيا واضحا للكشف عن الفاشيات والإبلاغ عنها والاستجابة لها؛ 7 أيام للكشف عن فاشية مشتبه بها، ويوم واحد لإبلاغ سلطات الصحة العامة، و7 أيام لبدء إجراءات الاستجابة المبكرة.

EMPHNET is conducting a three-day Public Health Empowerment Program – One Health (PHEP-One Health) Training of Trainers Workshop, bringing together 10 experts from Palestine who will serve as trainers and technical resource persons supporting the program's implementation.

Through technical discussions, case studies, and hands-on exercises, the workshop strengthens participants’ facilitation and mentorship skills across key field epidemiology competencies, including outbreak investigation, applied problem-solving, and data analysis and interpretation. Sessions also cover assessment, multidisciplinary One Health teamwork, communication, and fieldwork supervision, while training and mentorship tools are being contextualized to reflect Palestinian surveillance systems, priority public health threats, and field realities.

Funded by the Pandemic Fund, the workshop is part of EMPHNET's efforts to support implementation of the basic-level PHEP-One Health program in Palestine, equipping trainers and mentors with the skills and tools needed to guide participants through both the classroom training and fieldwork phases.

تعقد امفنت ورشة تدريب مدربين على مدى ثلاثة أيام ضمن برنامج تمكين الصحة العامة – نهج الصحة الواحدة، بمشاركة 10 خبراء من فلسطين، يجري إعدادهم للقيام بدور المدربين والمرشدين والمرجعية الفنية الداعمة لتنفيذ البرنامج.

ومن خلال النقاشات الفنية، ودراسات الحالة، والتمارين التطبيقية، تعمل الورشة على تعزيز مهارات المشاركين في التدريب والإرشاد ضمن مجموعة من كفاءات الوبائيات الميدانية، بما يشمل تقصي الفاشيات، وحل المشكلات التطبيقية، وجمع بيانات الترصد وتحليلها وتفسيرها.

كما تتناول جلسات الورشة أساليب تقييم المتدربين، والإرشاد الفعال، والعمل ضمن فرق متعددة التخصصات، والتواصل وإدارة النزاعات، والإشراف على العمل الميداني، إلى جانب استخدام دراسات الحالة في التدريب وتقديم التغذية الراجعة الفعالة. ويعمل المشاركون كذلك على مراجعة أدوات التدريب والإرشاد ومواءمتها مع أنظمة الترصد في فلسطين، وأولويات الصحة العامة، والواقع الميداني، بما يدعم جاهزية تنفيذ البرنامج في السياق الفلسطيني.

وتأتي الورشة، الممولة من صندوق الجائحة، ضمن جهود امفنت لدعم تنفيذ المستوى الأساسي من برنامج تمكين الصحة العامة – نهج الصحة الواحدة في فلسطين، من خلال إعداد مدربين ومرشدين يمتلكون المهارات والأدوات اللازمة لمرافقة المشاركين خلال مرحلتي التدريب الصفي والعمل الميداني.

On September 7, Pakistan’s National Institute of Health (NIH) marked World Field Epidemiology Day 2026, bringing together FETP alumni, graduates, and fellows to celebrate the field epidemiology community and its contributions to public health.

EMPHNET was invited as a special guest in recognition of its support to the FETP program in Pakistan. The occasion also reflected this year’s WFED theme, “Protecting Communities from Behind the Scenes,” highlighting the people, partnerships, and sustained support that help strengthen field epidemiology capacity and enable public health action long before threats become visible.

Last week, on September 7, the Bangladesh Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) marked World Field Epidemiology Day 2026, bringing together former and current FETP course directors, residents, and graduates from the Advanced and Intermediate cohorts.

Representatives from EMPHNET, the US CDC, and IEDCR also joined the celebration, which brought together members of Bangladesh’s field epidemiology community to recognize their contributions and continued role in strengthening field epidemiology capacity in the country.
