In 2009, the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET) was established to be an umbrella organization for field epidemiology training programs (FETPs) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) with the purpose of connecting and supporting the region’s FETPs whose epidemiological capacities prove essential, especially in the context of the EMR’s complex public health profile. Starting i

n 2009 as a regional network for Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) in the EMR, EMPHNET expanded its work in 2012 to incorporate new areas of work such as rapid response, polio eradication, outreach emergency, and other areas. Such expansion stemmed from requests received from countries as well as challenges detected by EMPHNET and its partners. In 2015, EMPHNET launched the Global Health Development (GHD) initiative to meet the growing needs and requests coming from EMR countries as a means for leveraging health outcomes.

📣يتطلب تعزيز استدامة الاستجابة لفيروس نقص المناعة البشرية أنظمة أقوى وقيادة مجتمعية وتنسيقًا فعّالًا واستثمارًا طويل الأمد.

ومن خلال الدورة الثالثة من المنحة الإقليمية المتعددة البلدان لبرامج فيروس نقص المناعة البشرية في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا، تدعم امفنت، بالتعاون مع تحالف الصحة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا والجهات المنفذة الفرعية في مصر والأردن ولبنان والمغرب وتونس، الجهود الرامية إلى تعزيز استجابات أكثر استدامة لفيروس نقص المناعة البشرية تقودها المجتمعات المحلية في المنطقة.

وتشكّل هذه الدورة محطة مهمة، إذ تم اختيار امفنت لتكون الجهة الرئيسية المنفذة للمنحة، لتصبح بذلك أول مؤسسة من منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا تتولى هذا الدور في منحة إقليمية يدعمها الصندوق العالمي. ويعكس ذلك تنامي الدور القيادي للمنطقة والالتزام بتبنّي حلول تُصمَّم وتُنفَّذ محليًا.

📣Strengthening sustainable HIV responses requires stronger systems, community leadership, coordinated action, and long-term investment.

Through the MC MENA III grant, EMPHNET, in collaboration with the MENA-H Coalition and Sub-Recipients across Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, and Tunisia, is supporting efforts to advance sustainable and community-led HIV responses across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

This cycle introduces a milestone: EMPHNET has been selected as the Principal Recipient, becoming the first institution from the MENA region to take on this roale for a Global Fund-supported regional grant. This reflects growing regional leadership and commitment to locally driven solutions.

As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen public health capacity and support workforce development in the region, EMPHNET is pleased to launch two new free online courses through its Learning Management System:

• Foundations of Implementation Research
• Leadership and Management for Primary Healthcare Workers

Designed for healthcare providers, public health professionals, researchers, program managers, students, and other health practitioners, these courses provide foundational knowledge and practical skills in implementation research, leadership, and management.

These courses are offered as part of the Mental and Reproductive Health Integration and Access (MARIA) Project, implemented by EMPHNET under the leadership of the Jordan Ministry of Health, and supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

في إطار جهودها المستمرة لتعزيز قدرات الصحة العامة ودعم تطوير القوى العاملة الصحية في المنطقة، تطلق امفنت مساقين تدريبيين جديدين، يقدّمان بالمجّان عبر الإنترنت، من خلال نظام إدارة التعلّم التابع لها:

تستهدف هذه المساقات مقدمي الرعاية الصحية، ومتخصصي الصحة العامة، والباحثين، ومديري البرامج، والطلبة، وغيرهم من الممارسين الصحيين، وتزوّدهم بالمعارف الأساسية والمهارات العملية اللازمة في مجالات بحوث التنفيذ والقيادة والإدارة.

As a regional leader in strengthening field epidemiology capacity and advancing the development of the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP), EMPHNET continues to provide a platform for collaboration, peer learning, and strategic dialogue among country programs.

On June 8, the EMPHNET FETP Board of Directors biannual meeting convened, and country representatives from 16 countries across the Eastern Mediterranean Region and other priority countries, alongside EMPHNET leadership and technical teams.

The meeting highlighted key developments since the previous Board meeting, featured reflections from newly established FETPs in Syria and Kuwait, and explored opportunities to further strengthen collaboration, institutionalization, and sustainability across country programs.

EMPHNET, through its training arm, the International Academy of Public Health, convened Family Health Team (FHT) implementing teams, including 14 participants from the Ministry of Health of Jordan, alongside partners from WHO in Amman to review progress in the implementation of the FHT approach.

The workshop provided an opportunity for implementing teams to share field experiences, highlight key achievements, discuss implementation challenges, and document lessons learned and recommendations. Participants also identified priority actions and next steps to support the continued implementation of the FHT approach.

This project is implemented by the Ministry of Health of Jordan, with support from EMPHNET through IAPH, in collaboration with WHO and with support from the European Union.

Following the successful completion of the Curriculum Validation Workshop for the FETP One Health (Public Health Empowerment Program (PHEP) – One Health) in Jordan, a 3-day Mentorship Workshop is currently taking place at EMPHNET Headquarters in Amman.

Led by the Ministry of Health of Jordan under the Pandemic Fund, and in collaboration with EMPHNET, WHO, and other One Health stakeholders, the workshop brings together 13 mentors from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environment, and the Royal Medical Services to strengthen mentorship capacities and support the implementation of the FETP One Health program in Jordan.

The project contributes to strengthening collaboration across sectors and advancing the One Health approach to address public health challenges at the human, animal, and environmental interface.
