Happy Emancipation Day, Jamaica! 🇯🇲✊🏾

Did you know that on August 1, 1834, the Emancipation Declaration was read from the steps of the Old King's House in Spanish Town, then the capital of Jamaica? That moment signaled the abolition of slavery for approximately 311,000 enslaved Africans across the island. However full freedom did not come immediately. Freed people were forced into a mandatory apprenticeship period where they still had to work for their former enslavers without pay for up to 40 hours per week, simply in exchange for basic necessities. Full emancipation was finally granted in 1838.

Emancipation Day was first recognised as a public holiday in 1893, removed in 1962 after independence, then reinstated in 1997 by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson following a powerful national movement to honour Jamaica's African heritage and the true roots of our freedom.

Today we celebrate not just a date on the calendar but the courage, sacrifice and unbreakable spirit of our ancestors. At JCI Jamaica, we carry that legacy forward through every community we touch, every young leader we develop and every life we empower. Their fight for freedom is the foundation we build on. 🕊️

PEACE. SPORT. COMMUNITY. ⚽🟢🇯🇲🔥

On February 18, JCI Jamaica proudly stood alongside HWPL, Y.A.R.D. Empire, the Jamaica National Commission for UNESCO, Life Pak Foundation, CVSS, SDC, JDF, and JCF as collaborating partners for the inaugural Jamaica Peace Cup 2026 at Breezy Castle Sports Centre, Central Kingston.

This was not just a football match. This was a statement. 💬

Young men from communities once divided came together on one field, under one goal — PEACE. And JCI Jamaica was honoured to be part of that moment.

⚽ Congratulations to Parade Gardens — Champions of the inaugural Jamaica Peace Cup 2026!
🥈 And to Rose Gardens — your fight, your talent, and your heart did not go unnoticed.

Sport builds bridges. Unity builds communities. And sustained peace builds a better Jamaica.

We will always show up for our people. Every. Single. Time. 💪🇯🇲

"Peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of creative alternatives for responding to conflict." — Dorothy Thompson
