Caring Cooks of Jersey

Caring Cooks of Jersey A local not for profit organisation enabling children & families in Jersey to access nutritious food

Caring Cooks of Jersey was founded in February 2014 by one Mum’s kind gesture to cook a meal once a week, for a family who were struggling either financially or through illness, to ensure that they could sit down to eat a nutritional home cooked meal and spend quality time together. Becoming more aware of families struggling to feed their children with home cooked, and healthy food due to long wor

king hours, financial struggles and separation, we developed our Weekly Meal Service, bringing together a network of Islanders who also wanted to help to deliver the service, through referrals from the partners we work with in the Island. Cooking skills used to be passed down from generation to generation, but this trend has been broken and now there is a genuine skills gap around food preparation and healthy eating. So in 2015, we launched our Community Cooking Programme which has been developed to directly give parents the skills and confidence to encourage them into the kitchen to prepare and cook healthy meals from scratch for their family. We are now a Jersey charity and registered NPO and we specifically support families with children of school age, as we strongly believe that food and nutrition from the weaning stage right through a child’s life is very important and we want to support parents in making that a part of daily life. All of our services are free of charge to families and are funded by charitable donations.

🥕🍲 Let's Get Cooking Programme - Year 6 🍲🥕

Our Year 6 pupils turned into souperstars last week, chopping, grating and creating their very own delicious Vegetable Soup from scratch.

As part of our Let's Get Cooking Programme, pupils developed practical kitchen skills while learning about healthy eating, seasonal vegetables and food preparation. Most importantly, they gained confidence in the kitchen and discovered just how rewarding it can be to make something nutritious from scratch.

We hope some of the soup made it home for you to enjoy and that you got a little taste of all their hard work! 😋🥄

FANCY A CHALLENGE?

We're absolutely delighted to be one of the charities supported by the Harbour Heritage Trail Run, alongside Freeda Jersey.

This brilliant challenge, kindly supported by Ports of Jersey and Trail Monkey Running - Jersey, will take runners along one of Jersey’s most beautiful coastal routes, from Bonne Nuit to Rozel Harbour.

Funds raised for Caring Cooks will help us continue providing practical food support for children and families across the island.

A tough run, a stunning route and a very good reason to take part.

🌟 Let’s Get Cooking Programme | Year 6 Week 1 🌟

Last week, our Year 6 pupils made breaded garlic chicken with apple coleslaw, and what a brilliant first session it was 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

Alongside making something delicious, the children practised key cooking skills including knife skills, grating and safely handling raw chicken. We also explored food hygiene, protein and healthy eating, linking our learning back to the Eatwell Guide 🍗🍎

A fantastic start to the programme, with some very tasty results!

Behind the headlines

The cost of living is one of the biggest talking points in this election, and understandably so.

Behind the discussions, statistics and debates are families making difficult choices every day.

At Caring Cooks, we continue to see the impact rising costs are having across our island, particularly during school holidays and periods of increased pressure.

Sometimes support is not about solving every problem - it's about creating one less worry.

Whatever the outcome of the election, the pressures many families are facing across our island remain very real.

We loved creating this for the year 13 leavers!

We are so pleased to see Hautlieu School highlighting the importance of preparing young people for life beyond school and we are so glad they reached out to us.

Learning how to cook a few simple meals, shop sensibly, understand basic nutrition and manage food on a budget are life skills that stay with you long after education ends.

For many young people, moving away from home is the first time they are fully responsible for feeding themselves. Having the confidence to prepare simple, affordable meals can make a huge difference, not just financially, but also to wellbeing, independence and overall health.

That is exactly why we have created The Student Food Survival Guide. A practical guide designed to help students feel more confident in the kitchen, with simple recipes, shopping tips and everyday food basics to help make the transition into independent living a little easier.

Good luck year 13!!

***Spud Truck update ***

Due to the very hot weather this week, we have made the decision to cancel the Spud Truck 🥵

As much as we love being out in the community, the safety and comfort of the children, families, volunteers and our team has to come first, especially when temperatures are this high.

The food already purchased for this week will not go to waste. We will be donating it through our charity partners so it can still reach people who need it.

We know this may be disappointing, and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Next stop; Summer Holidays!

It another hot one today!! 🥵Plenty of shade at Haute Vallée School though!See you at 4:30!!

🍄🥦 Year 5 pupils were brilliant last week as part of our Let’s Get Cooking Programme.

They practised knife skills, mastered the pané method to make baked breaded vegetables, investigated sugary drinks, and explored 5 a day, portion sizes and how fruit and veg help fuel our bodies 👀🥤

Hands on food education in action!

We had to share this lovely feedback from our Flourish Jersey team.

Flourish is Caring Cooks’ social enterprise, delivering school meals across Jersey on behalf of the Government of Jersey.

This beautiful message from a student is such a reminder that school food is about so much more than what is served on the plate. It is about the people, the daily kindness, the familiar faces and the small conversations that can mean a great deal to a young person.

We are so proud of our Flourish teams and the care they bring to schools every single day. 💚

Sometimes the loveliest feedback comes in the simplest form.

This beautiful note was received by our team at Les Quennevais School from a student who wanted to say thank you before leaving school.

It is such a reminder that our canteen teams do so much more than prepare and serve meals. They are familiar faces, daily smiles, kind words and part of school life for so many young people.

To our Le Quennevais team, and to all of our Flourish teams working across Jersey’s schools, thank you. The work you do matters, and moments like this show just how much you are seen and appreciated.

We are INCREDIBLY proud of you. 💚
