AKWABA CENTRE - A place of welcome for children in street situations.
Akwaba means “welcome” in Baoulé. And this is exactly what children find here!

In Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire 🇨🇮 the Akwaba Centre offers safety, care, and dignity to children living in street situations. The centre is located in one of the most populated districts of the city, where more than 15,000 children are estimated to live in street situations.

Since 2000, it has responded to their educational, social, health, and family needs. Every Friday, the outreach team goes into the streets. They meet children and young people, build trust, and invite them to come to the centre.

For younger children who have recently arrived on the streets, there is a residential programme. They receive shelter, food, medical care, and education inside the centre. When possible, the team also works to reunite them with their families.

For adolescents who have spent a long time on the streets and have often developed deep mistrust towards institutions, family reunification is more complex.

The centre therefore provides daily schooling, meals, healthcare, legal documentation support, and vocational training. This helps them gradually rebuild trust and open pathways away from the streets.

Each year, the Akwaba Centre supports around 200 children, girls and boys. More importantly, it offers something essential: A chance for a different future.

From the street… to a place of welcome.

Children out of school - Who are Children in Street Situations?

UNICEF define Children in Street Situations (CiSS) as children whose world and livelihood depend on what they can obtain in the streets. Some are abandoned, orphaned, or have run away from their families. Others live alone, or with siblings or peers who share the same reality.

Every day, all over the world, millions of children are on the street, part of an invisible and complex phenomenon, difficult to measure and understand.

Are they on the streets because they are out of school? Or are they out of school because they are on the streets? It is difficult to know. But among the 273 million children and youth who risk not returning to school this September, many are or will become children in street situations.

The streets can be an unforgiving place for children. They are at risk of infectious diseases, and are frequently exposed to violence, bullying, sexual exploitation, and substance abuse. Access to healthcare and protection services is often limited. Missing critical school years severely reduces their chances of obtaining decent work and fulfilling their potential in life.

The Lasallian network is committed to addressing this issue in many countries around the world.

Stay tuned for our next post to learn more about the Akwaba Center in Côte d’Ivoire and how it supports children in street situations.

This September, not every child will return to school. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Without school, many children are forced to work. Instead of learning, they spend their days in fields, factories, markets, or on the streets. Girls are often the first to be excluded.

Without access to education, children are more exposed to:
-Violence
-Exploitation
-Child labour
-Life on the streets

And once a child is out of school, returning becomes harder and harder.

Every child in a classroom is one child less exposed to life on the streets. Education is not a privilege. It is one of the strongest forms of protection a child can have.

This September, millions of children risk not returning to school. We cannot let them be left behind.

When the right to education falls, other rights become harder to protect.

-The right to learn.
-The right not to be forced into work.
-The right to equal opportunities.
-The right to be protected
-The right to build a future.
-The right to reach your full potential.

School is more than lessons, it is where rights become real. But 273 million children and young people risk not returning to classrooms.

This September, you can help stop the domino chain.

📝 According to UNESCO’s 2026 Global Education Monitoring Report, 273 million children and young people will not return to school.

✏️The number of children out of school dropped between 2000 and 2015. But progress has slowed down. For the past 7 years, the number has been rising again. Today, 273 million children and youth are out of school worldwide.

✏️There is also some good news. More children are going to school than ever before. In 2024, 1.4 billion students were enrolled in school worldwide. That’s 327 million more students than in 2000.

✏️School enrolment also increased by:
+45% in early childhood education
+161% in higher education

So what does this mean?
Even though progress has been made, millions of children are still out of school. It means the world may not reach universal access to education by 2030.

This September, you can help change that.
Stay tuned!

Ahead of the new school year La Salle University of Africa – Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 (INSUP - La Salle) welcomed students, families, partners, and visitors through two activities focused on education and academic and professional orientation.
-
First, the Institute held the second edition of its Open Days, welcoming the public to discover its different programmes, laboratories, and educational facilities.
The event brought together authorities, partners, teachers, students, and visitors around a shared goal: preparing a competent and innovative generation while remaining connected to its cultural values.
-
From July 13 to 18, La Salle also participated in the 2026 Information and Orientation Week (SIO).
Together with students, the administrative team welcomed future students, parents, and other visitors, providing information about the Institute’s programmes and opportunities and allowing them to exchange directly with the educational team.
-
The Open Days also included a panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges of Artificial Intelligence in Burkina Faso, while highlighting the importance of preserving cultural identity in an increasingly digital world.
-
Through these initiatives, La Salle continues to support young people in their academic and professional choices and to prepare them for the demands of the world of work.
