Circolo Scandinavo, Nordic artists' residency in Rome with support from the Nordic Council of Minist

Circolo Scandinavo aims at offering residencies for Nordic artists in the studio apartments in Rome, in order to strengthen and develop the individual Nordic artists' work, and to increase dialogue and network between the Nordic artists in an international context. The artists-in-residence can focus on their individual artistic work, as well as networking and promotion within the framework of a flexible artist-in-residence programme. Circolo Scandinavo organizes events and artist talks to expose the Nordic artists in Rome. Circolo Scandinavo’s Residence in Rome for Nordic Artists is a unique institution. It offers artists from five Nordic countries, and from all forms of art, residency for one or more months under the same roof to work in an interdisciplinary, inter-Nordic environment. This happens nowhere else and is of importance both to each individual artist and to the cultural life of the individual countries as well as to the experience of a common Nordic artistic identity in an international context. The Director – a Nordic artist – has the overall responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Residence. Since 2012 the director is Ingo Arnason (Iceland), Theatre director, . Since 2006 the Circolo has been located in Via della Lungara, in a large, spacious apartment in the stately “Casino di Vigna” from the 16th century as a neighbour to Villa Farnesina and opposite Palazzo Corsini where the Swedish Queen Christina spent the last 35 years of her life.

This saturday, composer and sound artist Amina Hocine had a performance at Villa Lontanas Gallery, supported by Circolo Scandinavo. Amina performed on her self-built organ, creating an evocative sound experience.

Before this, Circolo hosted a lunch followed by presentations from some of our Artists-in-Residence:

We took part of Lina Kryopyte’s work and her exploration with the material scagliola.

Ane Barstand Solvang let us in on her artistic research in themes of abortion history, witches, antiquity and medicinal flowers.

Emilie Isaksen showed photographies from her current project. She has developed film photography with w**e, coffee and herbs collected on-site during her research trips.

And last but not least; Karl Ingar Røys screened a short film about a Spanish opera-activist group, and gave a presentation of his working practice during his residency.

Ciao ragazzi!

I’m Tilda and I’ll be joining the amazing team at Circolo this fall – quite happy about that as you may see..

Originally, I’m from Varberg, Sweden but I currently live in Malmö where I just finished my Bachelor’s degree in Architecture at Lund University.

Besides contributing to exciting projects happening here, I will also have the opportunity to be involved with the work of Stalker (STALKER ) that Circolo collaborates with. Stalker’s practice focuses on social and ecological challenges with a strong local and political connection. They explore urban spaces through experimental and participatory methods - like collective walking through neglected territories. Very interesting!

Apart from architecture I’m interested in music, theatre, dance and scenography and it feels so inspiring being here getting insight into a mix of artistic practices and projects connected to Rome.

Very grateful for this opportunity! Ci vediamo :)

Wednesday evening we had an aperitivo gathering at the Circolo with our resident artists and researchers, and we were joined by Circolo friends and affiliates Giulia Fiocca and Lorenzo Romito from STALKER as well!

Along with presecco and interesting conversations, we were treated to fascinating presentations of current and upcoming projects by author, playwright and journalist Alexandra Pascalidou (Alexandra Pascalidou ) and architect, author and postdoc researcher in architectural history Netta Böök 😸

🌟MEET THE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE 🌟

The Swedish composer Stefan Thorsson spent the month of June at Circolo Scandinavo.

Stefan is based in Berlin since 20 years back. He describes himself as the worst German in the world, as he does not drink b**r, does not like sausages and hates techno. His interest for music did not come from his childhood home. It was rather a passion he explored on his own.

This Tuesday evening, we had a fruitful and interesting exchange with the residents. Kendra Reid exhibited 16 Travertine-sculptures, Ane Barstad Solvang presented her portfolio, Karl Ingar Röys one of his films, Annukka Lilja presented two trailers for upcoming productions, and Erik Törnqvist contributed with a presentation and a small workshop. Lastly, Jesus Hererra Martinez opened up his studio for visits.

Are Blytt från Norge spenderade maj månad på Circolo Scandinavo. Han är bildkonstnär och har spenderat en hel del i Rom under sitt vuxna liv. Intervjun inleds med ett citat av Andy Warhol från 1975; ’Rome, Italy is an example of what happens when the buildings in a city lasts too long…’

The Finnish filmmaker Pia Andell stayed at the residency during the month of May this spring.

Being at Circolo Scandinavo has been an experience of calmness and focus, while having time exploring different sites of the city, such as the non-Catholic cemetery and Ostia Antica. The friendliness of the Romans was something unexpected, and seeing monks owning their own dogs.

Initiated by the artists themselves, we’ve enjoyed a number of performances, installations, readings, films and videoworks during the last couple of weeks at Circolo Scandinavo. Most of the artists has now left, since their residencies came to an end. A few of them however, has some more time left to create and explore.

Many thanks for this fruitful period, we soon welcome a group of new artists and we’re excited too see what kind of dynamic it will bring.

Last Thursday we all visited Spoleto, a smaller town located in Umbria. We were lucky enough to get a guided tour at Palazzo Collicola, (Musei Civici,) alongside the director Saverio Verini. The palazzo currently has some impressive exhibitions with works by Alexander Calder, Meret Oppenheimer and Sol Lewitt, among other local artists.

We got to see a lot of inspiring sights of the town, including the famous fresco by Filippo Lippi in the Cathedral Santa Maria Assunta.

🌟MEET THE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE 🌟

The Finnish dancer, artistic director, producer and choreographer , Anna Torkkel, spent 2 and a half months between February and April at Circolo Scandinavo.

The presence of history in Rome calms her down, it adds a soothing quality. When things are over 2000 years old, and manmade, the perspectives are drastically changing. The viewpoint of oneself in a place of that kind, adds some distance from the circles back home. Being in the world in general gives one a feeling of awe when a lot of things have existed parallel to one another, looping eternally.
