6 April | International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

Every year on 6 April, the world celebrates the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, a United Nations observance that recognizes the unique and transformative power of sport.
Sport is far more than competition: it is a universal language capable of connecting people across cultures, generations, and social backgrounds, while promoting dialogue, mutual respect, inclusion, and solidarity.

The 2026 edition of the Day highlights the theme “Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers”, a message that reflects the growing awareness that sport can help overcome divisions, reduce isolation, and create opportunities for participation and belonging.
This vision is deeply aligned with the principles promoted by UNESCO, which underlines sport as a powerful vehicle for social inclusion, gender equality, and youth empowerment.

At the heart of this observance lies a simple but powerful idea: sport can contribute to human development when it is made accessible, inclusive, and meaningful for all.

Well-designed sport-for-development initiatives combine physical activity with education, community engagement, and local partnerships, helping to strengthen trust, resilience, and social cohesion.

For FISpT, this day is an important reminder that the mission of “sport for all” is not only about participation in activity, but also about building communities where everyone can find a place, a voice, and an opportunity to grow.
Through sport, we can promote wellbeing, encourage active lifestyles, and contribute to a more peaceful and inclusive society.

On this 6 April, FISpT reaffirms its commitment to supporting the values of development, peace, inclusion, and solidarity, and to working with partners who share the belief that sport can truly help build a better world.

📌FISpT Celebrates the First Sport for All Day‼️

📍3 April 2026 marks a historic date for the International Sport for All Federation (FISpT): the first official Sport for All Day‼️

📍From this year onward, 3 April will be celebrated annually as a special occasion to honor the founding of the Federation and to renew its commitment to promoting sport as an accessible, inclusive, and unifying force for everyone.

📍Founded on 3 April 1982 in Strasbourg, at the Council of Europe, the International Sport for All Federation was created with a clear and ambitious mission: to promote Sport for All and to build connections among organizations and individuals committed to this vision.

📍The Federation’s Statutes were adopted at the time of its creation, and its constitution was later approved during the first Board of Directors meeting on 24 February 1984.

📍Since its foundation, FISpT has stood for a simple but powerful idea: sport must be open to all. Its mission has been to promote physical activity not only as a form of recreation or performance, but as a vital instrument of self-fulfilment, social inclusion, mutual understanding, and friendship among peoples and nations. FISpT has consistently presented itself as an action-oriented and consultative organization, encouraging international exchange in the spirit of Sport for All.

📍Over the years, the Federation has contributed to the growth of the global Sport for All movement by supporting cooperation among institutions, communities, and advocates who believe in the social value of sport. Its role has been to help spread a culture in which physical activity is accessible regardless of age, ability, background, or level of performance.

📍A major milestone in FISpT’s history came in 1991, when the Federation submitted its first application
for recognition to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). After the completion of the documentation process in 1994, FISpT received provisional recognition during the IOC Executive Board meeting in Atlanta in December 1994. This was officially confirmed in January 1995, and in June 1995, during the 104th IOC Session in Budapest, FISpT obtained full and definitive recognition.

📍In 2009, the Federation relocated its headquarters to Bahrain, where it was officially registered, opening a new phase of international development and organizational consolidation. More recently, FISpT has continued to evolve through renewed institutional, digital, and administrative development, reinforcing its global presence and visibility.🏆

📍Today, as FISpT celebrates its founding anniversary, the Federation is proud to announce that 3 April will henceforth be observed every year as Sport for All Day.

📍This new annual celebration will serve as a reminder of where the Federation began, what it has achieved, and the values it continues to uphold. Each year, FISpT will mark the occasion with dedicated initiatives and activities designed to celebrate participation, inclusion, wellbeing, and the universal right to move, play, and belong.🥇🥇

📍Sport for All Day will not only commemorate the birth of FISpT in 1982, but also reaffirm its enduring mission for the future: to make sport a shared language of humanity, capable of bringing people together across borders, generations, and differences.🏆🏆

🎈🎈🏅🏅📌Happy first Sport for All Day to the entire FISpT family‼️🎉🎉🎊🎊
