Last Wilderness was started by Nikhil Nagle in the year 2009, after he quit as the Head of India Equities at Citigroup Global Markets, to pursue his passion for wildlife conservation. Through his website www.thelastwilderness.org, Nikhil aims to spread awareness about the state of India's wildlife through each of its sections. About the NGO-

Last Wilderness Foundation, seeks to aid conservation

efforts in India by spreading the word about India’s wild heritage while also working with and supporting people and communities that live on the fringes and within India’s forests. Also informative articles regarding the subject have been published onto our website. At Last Wilderness Foundation, the conservation of wildlife is a continuous endeavor. We engage with urban and rural communities as well as the Forest Department in various capacities in a bid to understand and implement effective conservation measures. In urban areas, we work with children to spread awareness about wildlife and biodiversity as well as sensitise them towards conservation and the environment. In rural areas, we reach out to communities living within and around forests to understand, assess and address various conservation-related issues/impacts that may arise out of human-wildlife interaction. In this regard, it is our endeavour to work towards peaceful human-wildlife interaction to negate the chances of conflict. We also support the government, (by way of the Forest Department) in addressing and implementing conservation measures on field as well as assist them through regular workshops that are aimed at boosting their technical skills as well as their morale.

On the occasion of Earth Day, a series of conservation-driven activities were carried out with enthusiastic community participation. 🌍🌿

With the support of Astral Foundation and in collaboration with the Panna Tiger Reserve, a cleanliness drive was conducted at Brihaspati Kund and the Baghin River. Forest Guards and team members actively participated, and a meeting was also held with Gram Rakshaks to further strengthen conservation efforts.

Simultaneously, with the support of Dalmia Charitable Trust and in collaboration with the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary (Rampura Range), a cleanliness and tree plantation drive was organized at the NIC premises. The initiative saw active involvement from forest staff and team members, reinforcing the importance of environmental conservation.

These collective efforts highlight a strong, shared commitment towards safeguarding nature and building a greener, more sustainable future. 🌱

Small steps. Big impact. 🌍✨
Protecting our planet isn’t just for one day—it’s a daily promise we make to Earth. From planting trees to choosing reusable, every action counts.

Let’s turn awareness into action and make every day Earth Day.

In many forest regions, communities rely heavily on natural resources for their daily needs.
But limited livelihood options often lead to unstable incomes and increased pressure on forests.

By introducing alternative skills, hands-on training, and sustainable income opportunities, we aim to reduce this dependency—creating stability for people and protection for nature.

Be a Friend of the Forest by supporting initiatives that empower communities and protect nature.

Funded by Morningstar India, the Pardhi Education Centre by Last Wilderness Foundation serves as an inclusive learning space for children from the Pardhi community in Panna, focused on bridging foundational learning gaps, improving school enrolment and retention, and ensuring continuity for children affected by mobility and social exclusion.

Regular classes, learning materials, and life skills activities help build confidence, while teachers are trained through Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, an initiative of the Government of India, to strengthen the quality of education.

The programme also works closely with parents and local institutions to build trust and encourage participation, enabling sustained impact.

With support from Kuno Forest Department and Dalmia Charitable Trust, forest fire prevention awareness programs were conducted in the evening hours across the villages of Katila, Ranipura, and Garhi Morawan—at a time when villagers and farmers return home after a long day’s work.

With the participation of over 100 community members, including children, women, and men from the Sehariya and Moghiya communities, the sessions created a space for shared learning and dialogue.

Through engaging discussions, films, and simple presentations, participants were made aware of the causes of forest fires, their impacts, and practical ways to prevent them.

The sessions were followed by the distribution of essential materials—caps, water bottles, and bags—to support communities during the peak summer months.

Reaching communities at the right time ensures the message is not just heard but understood and carried forward.

In collaboration with the Panna Forest Department and Astral Foundation, a fire prevention workshop in Panna brought together local community members to build awareness, share practical knowledge, and strengthen preparedness ahead of the fire season. The session focused on understanding the causes of forest fires, how they can be prevented and what can be done if an existing forest fire is spotted.

After the sessions, LWF distributed caps, water bottles, and cloth bags to support hydration and heat safety during the peak summer months.
