Last Wilderness was started by Nikhil Nagle in the year 2009, after he quit as the Head of India Equities at Citigroup Global Markets, to pursue his passion for wildlife conservation. Through his website www.thelastwilderness.org, Nikhil aims to spread awareness about the state of India's wildlife through each of its sections. About the NGO-

Last Wilderness Foundation, seeks to aid conservation

efforts in India by spreading the word about India’s wild heritage while also working with and supporting people and communities that live on the fringes and within India’s forests. Also informative articles regarding the subject have been published onto our website. At Last Wilderness Foundation, the conservation of wildlife is a continuous endeavor. We engage with urban and rural communities as well as the Forest Department in various capacities in a bid to understand and implement effective conservation measures. In urban areas, we work with children to spread awareness about wildlife and biodiversity as well as sensitise them towards conservation and the environment. In rural areas, we reach out to communities living within and around forests to understand, assess and address various conservation-related issues/impacts that may arise out of human-wildlife interaction. In this regard, it is our endeavour to work towards peaceful human-wildlife interaction to negate the chances of conflict. We also support the government, (by way of the Forest Department) in addressing and implementing conservation measures on field as well as assist them through regular workshops that are aimed at boosting their technical skills as well as their morale.

When local knowledge becomes a recognised skill, when traditional practices become viable livelihoods, and when communities have real opportunities to shape their own futures — conservation becomes stronger.

From nature guiding and community enterprises to traditional crafts and alternative livelihoods, investing in people creates pathways that benefit both communities and wildlife.

Because conservation doesn’t begin with forests alone. It begins with people.

Conservation isn’t only about protecting forests—it’s about empowering the people who protect them every day.

By creating sustainable livelihoods, strengthening local communities, and valuing traditional knowledge, we can ensure that both people and nature flourish together.

Because the strongest forests are built on shared futures.

Every day is a step towards securing a future for tigers. 🐅

This International Tiger Day, we’re sharing glimpses from the field—working with communities, supporting conservation efforts, and protecting the landscapes that tigers call home.

Together, we can ensure that these forests continue to thrive for generations to come.

Strengthening partnerships for connected landscapes.

Last Wilderness Foundation participated in the in-person meeting of the Coalition for Wildlife Corridors, held at the Godrej Auditorium, New Delhi, and hosted by WWF-India.

Representing the organisation, Vidya Venkatesh, Director, Last Wilderness Foundation, joined fellow coalition partners and individual members from across the country to review the Coalition’s progress, exchange insights, and discuss the way forward for strengthening landscape connectivity and wildlife corridor conservation.

The meeting provided an important platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and building stronger partnerships to support long-term conservation efforts across India’s diverse landscapes.

Celebrating Nature’s Unsung Protectors.

Every snake plays a vital role in keeping nature healthy. From protecting crops by controlling rodent populations to supporting the food web, these remarkable reptiles silently help ecosystems thrive.

This World Snake Day, let’s celebrate their contribution to biodiversity and choose awareness over fear. When we protect snakes, we protect forests, farms, wildlife, and the balance of nature.

Every snake has a role. Every role matters.

World Snake Day
