Social Capital Credits

Social Capital Initiatives has developed a system of Social Capital Credits (SoCCs), a transformative community currency that rewards people for socially beneficial work and helps under-served communities climb out of poverty. Communities earn SoCCs for doing social good such as managing waste, planting trees and sending daughters to school. SoCCs earned can be redeemed for products and services such as water filters, health check-ups and micro-credit loans. SoCCs are earned and redeemed through our online platform, the SoCC Market. SoCCs can be used to counter poverty, empower communities, and multiply the effect of development aid. Social Capital Initiatives is currently helping implement SoCCs in the following countries:

- Costa Rica
- India
- Ghana
- Kenya

In Gaya, Bihar, classrooms are evolving into spaces where students lead, teach, and grow through digital learning 💻🌿supported by Asia Initiatives (DBA) Social Capital Initiatives turning everyday classrooms into hubs of digital confidence and collaboration 🤝✨

Over the past year, Udayan’s Digital Literacy (DLC) program has become a living part of school culture 📚. Through cascades of learning 🔄, students from higher grades (Classes 7–8) mentor younger peers (Classes 3–5), earning SoCCs while unlocking tools like Canva, MS Office, and Google Drive building real-world digital confidence 💡💻

What stands out most? They don’t wait to be guided anymore they step up 🚀, lead sessions, and learn by doing. Their SoCCs aren’t just points; they’re pathways to skills, confidence, and a future they’re shaping themselves 🌱✨

Social Capital Initiatives (DBA) Asia Initiatives is transforming the digital divide into a gateway of opportunity by empowering young minds through community-driven digital learning in Odisha. 💻✨

In Harekrushna Nagar and Podempeta, baseline surveys helped identify over 300 children with limited access to digital tools unlocking pathways for inclusive, need-based learning.

From access to action, young learners are now part of immersive digital sessions exploring, practicing, and building real-world computer skills in a safe, engaging environment.

Through Cascades of Learning, mentors are not just teaching they are growing alongside their peers strengthening their own learning capacity while earning SoCCs, redeemable for continued and advanced digital classes.

As learning flows within the community, children are not just gaining skills they are shaping brighter, more connected futures.
Because when learning is shared, communities don’t just grow they transform. 🌱💻✨

Here are a few glimpses of women from the JC Flowers - funded Kitchen Gardens in Yavatmal, Maharashtra, supported by Asia Initiatives (DBA) Social Capital Initiatives, and implemented by Deendayal, proudly harvesting fresh produce from their gardens. 🌱🥬

As we mark the end of the second year of this initiative, these Kitchen Gardens have become more than just small plots of land they are vibrant sources of nutrition, helping women and their families access fresh, diverse vegetables while strengthening the fight against anemia in their communities.

Through hands-on training and shared learning, women have embraced organic kitchen gardening practices and are now passing this knowledge forward encouraging and guiding other women in their villages to start gardens of their own.

While this phase of the journey concludes, the impact will continue to grow. These gardens will keep flourishing nourishing families, strengthening household nutrition, and empowering women to become champions of healthier communities

Led by Asia Initiatives (now DBA Social Capital Initiatives – SCI), in partnership with Deendayal in Yavatmal and supported by JC Flowers, this collaborative program is empowering women across Yavatmal through sustainable Kitchen Gardens.

These Women SoCCs Managers have completed intensive, hands-on training in seasonal crop planning, seed selection, nursery raising, soil preparation, organic composting, natural pest management, water-efficient practices, and nutrition-focused recipe integration.

Today, they lead with confidence conducting 50+ trainings across 75+ villages and reaching over 2,000 participants. The first quarter of composting batches has been successfully completed in all villages, with recipe-sharing sessions actively underway across most communities, strengthening both nutrition awareness and sustainable practices at the household level.

Through SoCCs - SCI’s community currency for social good women earn credits for composting, recipe sessions, and anti-plastic campaigns, redeeming them for seed kits, Kitchen Garden equipment, and sustainable livelihood resources. In doing so, they transform everyday actions into tangible rewards turning knowledge into lasting community change and strengthening resilience at the grassroots level. ✨

Under Jeevika Skill Based Livelihood for Rural India, led by Asia Initiatives now (DBA) Social Capital Initiatives (SCI) in partnership with Dilasa Sanstha and made possible through the support of JC Flowers, 21 youths from the villages of Yavatmal successfully complete their electrician training and emerge as skilled service providers.

Comprehensive instruction in electrical theory, wiring systems and safety, appliance repair, and hands-on site exposure enables each participant to build strong technical competence, earning a training completion certificate and a professional toolkit redeemed via SoCCs.

Through SoCCs, SCI’s community currency for social good, these youths earn credits by repairing community electrical applications, supporting 3-phase and 2-phase wiring, fixing motors, and providing free electrical services to households. With over 25 community electrical works completed, local infrastructure is strengthened while young people build confidence, income opportunities, and sustainable livelihoods.

By transforming community service into opportunity, this initiative demonstrates how skills, responsibility, and social capital together drive lasting rural transformation.

This September, our Program Director Surabhi and Assistant Program Manager Aman visited our partner Nydhee in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, where the SoCCs Phase 2 Goat Rearing Project is creating ripples of transformation. 🐐💚

Here, women are not only rearing goats , they are building zero-mortality herds, saving through kumpis, and leading their Farmer Producer Organization with vision and confidence. What touched us most were the inspiring stories of change:

✨ Anita Nayak, who has turned her SoCCs earnings into gold savings, creating long-term security for her family.
✨ Tulsi Nayak, who now manages a thriving herd of 35 goats, owns a two-wheeler, and inspires other women to dream bigger, and many more such women being changemakers in the community.

These women are proving that goat rearing is more than just an income source it is a pathway to dignity, leadership, and aspirations beyond livestock.

Every visit reaffirms our belief in the power of community-led change, where women lift each other up and create a future of resilience and opportunity. 💪🌱

In August, our Senior Technology and Program Manager, Gowrish, visited our partner organization Dilasa Janvikas Pratishthan in Sawantwadi, Maharashtra. There, we work with 500 women farmers adopting the system of rice intensification (SRI) as a farming methodology in their practice. This organic approach increases yields, reduces methane emissions, and eases physical labor for farmers. 🌱

During his visit, Gowrish spoke with active participants who are learning to integrate SRI into their practices. The participants shared with him how this transition to sustainable farming has strengthened both their livelihoods and the environment.

Gowrish was also inspired and overjoyed to see past participants continuing SRI. ✨

This visit, along with many others, reaffirm our team’s belief in the power of community-led change, where knowledge, collaboration, and resilience come together to build sustainable futures.

Make sure to be on the look-out to see what local partner we visit next!
